Well we do not have a second round pick this year but the Rox are working out a few guys that seem to be headed that direction or undrafted all together. So I was wondering... what are the rules on when a player can and cannot be worked out, before and after the draft? How long is it before the undrafted players become free agents? Immediately following the draft? Is there time between the draft and when an undrafted player becomes a free agent, that a team can work out the player? Players like D. Ewing, J. Hodge and D. Thompson are 2nd rounders so maybe they will try to pick up an extra pick to snag one of these. C. Thomas, J. Lucas and the others I cannot remember, are more likely to go undrafted. Would the Rockets work out players before the draft with the intentions of signing them after the draft? Just a few thoughts I wanted some feed back on...
Definitely, wherever it is legal. Undrafted players have gone on to good carreers allthough they are more risky. That is why they go undrafted. In fact, the NBA draft was reduced from 7 rounds to 2 in the CBA (IIRC) for the specific purpose of having a large undrafted FA pool. But, there still arent' enough good players ( with so many teams ) to fill out 7 rounds.
Thanks for the info krocket... Would be sweet if we could find an undrafted player that could produce.
I don't know if it's just cuz I've been watching more college basketball the last five years or so or what, but I really like the potential of some of the PG's and really players in general that are being talked about as potential second rounders or free agents like John Lucas and Chris Thomas. I think there are definitely 5 players or so that won't get drafted that will have long productive careers in the league.
