03, During the spring of my junior year in high school and the summer before my senior year, I took amino acids. It was something like five pills three times a day. I gained 20 lbs in that time period. I also hit the weights harder too, though. Truth is, just keep lifting weights. Your body will never get bigger than it is genetically made to get. It takes time. ------------------ DREAMer's Rocket Page
A better question might be, "Does anyone know of any weight gain supplements that work?" Most of them are crap from what I've read.
There's a couple good ways to gain weight. The first way worked well for me last year. I averaged 3-4 GOOD workouts a week and after every workout I'd have a big thick milkshake with about half the directed dosage of whey protein. Maybe the protein was garbage, but part of the combo was giving me the extra calories and the workouts turned the calories to good size. An added bene...the thought of a big ol milkshake after a workout is a good incentive. The size didn't come quickly, but it did come. The other way is how I've been doing it this year. Work really late. Eat dinner right before you crash at night. Skip the workout all together. Of course that's probably not the kind of weight you're looking for... ------------------ **
What are you taking ROckets03? Usually those weight gain drinks are pretty disgusting and have way too many calories in them for the average person(ie. not a bodybuilder/powerlifter). You're best bet, assuming you want quality weight and not a bunch of fat, would to simply eat 4-6 small to moderately sized meals that aren't high in fat content, take a daily multivitamin and mix in a little protein drink. This is all assuming you are working out too! Optimum Nutrition makes a pretty good protein powder called 100% Whey Protein, that mixes well with milk or water and it tastes pretty good too...for a nutritional drink! IMO it's best used 1-2 times a day. I like to have an 8oz drink in the morning after a workout because it helps my recovery time and either one in the afternoon or before I go to bed. Anyway, the easy way to gain weight is to eat big. ------------------ Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.
And remember, if you're not sure about something, rub it against a piece of paper. If the paper turns clear, it's your window to weight gain.
Actually you're wrong dc, steak has creatine. However, you'd have to eat about 5 lbs of steak to get a few grams of creatine! ------------------ Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.
I don't have a problem with weight gain, I have a problem with weight loss. But, to answer your question, I've been drinking a vanilla flavored meal replacement drink. I mix in about 24 grams of protein powder per drink, but that combination tastes like crap. So, what I've done to make the flavor taste better is to 1)mix it with frozen concentrate Cranberry juice(this flushes out the kidneys & tastes nasty as well) & 2)I throw in a banana for flavor. You could use any flavored juice drink that you like & mixing in fruit adds more fiber & flavor to it. The vanilla flavor is the most neutral flavor & usually mixes well with add ins. Just try several combinations, until you find the one you like. The banana has potassium, which decreases cramping in your muscles. If you're working out regularly, then the best time to consume the drink is within 2 hours after your workout, because you've pumped up your muscles & they are still full of blood, which means that they'll more easily absorb the protein to repair & grow your muscles. The only other kinds of supplements that I take are multi-vitamins & a calcium tablet(for the bones). I'm no nutrition expert, so your best bet would be to consult with one on how to gain weight. You might also pick up a copy of Muscle & Fitness magazine. They've got several good artcles about nutrition, exercise & they explain how your muscles work & grow & best of all, it's not just a muscle head magazine. Hope this helps & good luck. ------------------
1 gram of carbohydrate = 4 kcal = 4000 cal 1 gram of protein = 4 kcal = 4000 cal 1 gram of fat = 9 kcal = 9000 cal 1 gram of alcohol = 7 kcal = 7000 cal *If u want to gain weight, eat a lot of fat and drink lots of alcohol. If u want to gain muscle weight, you have to eat a balanced diet and lift heavier. In a nutshell, to lose weight, there has to be a calorie deficit. So, u either consume less calories to lose weight or you speed up your metabolism. To gain weight, you have to totally increase your caloric intake. This can be accomplished by sitting on your butt all the time eating and watching t.v., or eating a large amount of calories and working out heavily. People who are skinnier and leaner have fast twitch muscles and are aerobically built, while the bigger people have slow twitch muscles and are anaerobically built. If you want to gain muscle weight but not look as cut, eat lots of calories and lift heavy weights while doing less reps. This will build your bulk. Of course, it all depends on how big your bone stucture and your genetics are...like DREAMer said. About protein, excess protein you eat is not stored as protein, it turns into fat. You will not gain muscle by simply overeating protein. Protein responds to your hormones and your physical activity (ex. weight lifting). It must be noted though that supplements are advised against. Using your muscles builds muscle, supplements do not. Some make you get fat and some make you retain water, that's the weight you are gaining. If you want to gain the right kind of weight, work out heavy and often and have a complete and balanced diet. All the nutrients you will ever need come from the food you eat, not from a supplement. Hope that helps. ------------------ [This message has been edited by rocketteen (edited May 03, 2001).]

I think the whey protein tastes like crap. I won't go near the stuff. When I'm lifting heavy weights, I only go with the Soy Protein powder made by Genisoy or usually I get the Vitamin World brand Soy Protein Isolate in Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry(mmmm). After an hour to hour and a half of heavy weight lifting, I dump a scoop and a half of that(approx. 35-40 grams of protein, zero fat and carbs, 150 calories). I mix that with a cup and a half of skim milk. I like how it tastes compared to whey(barf). I recommend trying the soy protein powder. Most weightlifters just go with whey by default. But, Soy is just as good and it also is endorsed by the FDA in that 25 grams of soy protein a day cuts down your bad cholesterol levels whereas whey protein has cholesterol(although not much per serving; it adds up, though). I drink my shakes right after my workouts. Works good for me as a meal supplement as well. The key is 5 to 6 meals + meal supplements(protein bar, shake, etc.) evenly spaced out during the day, like every 2 - 3 hours and done consistently over time with workouts 3 times per week(or working one major muscle group once or twice per week with heavy weight is what I do). Must allow enough recovery time to recup. I pumped up pretty good and saw good gains but I got the flu and have been trying to get over it for two weeks now. My workouts and long bike rides are on standby for now . I still feel good, though, as 8 months of aerobic exercise and weight lifting(totalling 4-6 times per week) don't wear off over night. Once I feel better, I'm back into it. Helps to have a BowFlex handy . Surf [This message has been edited by Surfguy (edited May 03, 2001).]

Hey is one of the side effects to this thing suppose to be the constant urge to pee?? I have taken it the last two days and I constantly have to go to the bathroom. ------------------
If you're not used to taking in alot of fluids, yes you are going to urinate more. You should be drinking alot of water too. Actually you should be "doing your business" quite a few times a day. ------------------ Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.
Hey I bet no one drink more fluids then me. I am already used to taking care of business quite a number of times in a day. But this wieghtgainer thingy has like doubled my business if you know what Im sayin. ------------------
That actually brings up a good point... Whether the supplement is, creatine or protein or whatever, it puts extra strain on your kidneys, so it would be wise to drink a lot more water than you usually do to help flush the stuff out. ------------------ **
