Ray Patterson drafted Hakeem. Steve Patterson pretty much built the rest of the Championship team but was fired before 93-94 (not sure if the Elie aquisition was his or not; Drexler definitely was not). I remember they hired some guy named Todd Liweike but he quit by the end of the season (not sure if he was the GM; might have just been a VP).

I believe the CD was indeed the GM during our championship run, but not before.

I saw something that Steve Patterson might be a candidate for the Portland GM job.

I went to high school with Steve (Dulles, out in Sugar Land). Although we're no longer in touch, I remember him as a pretty good guy. I still think he didn't get the credit he deserved for putting together a team that won back-to-back titles.

Bob Weinhauer, VP of basketball operations, was instrumental in building the teams. He later left for Atlanta, as did former "20 Vision" halftime show host, Bruce Gietzen.

Ahhhh, you are correct. I wasn't sure 100% sure if it was CD or not.

However, Weinhauer was hired in 1994 once Les bought the team (prior to our 1st championship). So the team was already built (aside from Cassell who was drafted 2 months after Weinhauer was hired (per the Houston Chronicle - Weinhauer was given 50/50 power split with Rudy on personel decisions with Alexander giving the tying vote) and Drexler).
