So I'm stuck using a mac for a little while and I'm not all that familar with it.

Anyway, we have files shared over our LAN at home and I need access to them. I remember last year when I tried to get them over a mac there was a button called "network" on the left side of finder that you could conveniently click and go. However, said button is nowhere to be found.

So my question is how do I access the shared files/folders over the network now that I can't just go into finder and click network.

You may need to enable file sharing in the system controls.

Or just apple-K in the finder to bring up the "manual" server connection dialogue box.

In system preferences, the following are checked under the sharing tab - Personal file sharing and Windows Sharing

When I did Apple-K and hit browse, nothing showed up under networks. The PC works just fine but for whatever reason this mac won't show the files. Any other settings that I'm missing?

To share with Windows, I usually have better luck with SMB. Just type smb://ip address in the server address box. Some times the Mac is set to be in a different workgroup from the PC. In this case, you may have to correct that or modify your smb command accordingly.
