I have SBC Yahoo DSL and think it is kinda slow. I connect to the internet at 10mbps. I use Windows Xp and am using the enthernet modem that came in the set up box. What do you think I can do to get a faster connection or is this the fastest I can go. Is it even fast? Also, I noticed when I downloading files, I can only download two at a time. If I try three, it just stays at the file window (the one that shows the files moving from one side to the other). As soon as one of the files finishes, then the save as box shows up for the third file to download. I am not an expert like you guys but if you explain the steps to me for either of these two problems (assuming I can do somthing about it) I think I can do something. Thanks
A lot of your problem might have to do with how far you are away from the nearest switching station. Your connection speed isn't actually 10 mbps, that's just what is coming from your modem to your NIC. If SBC Yahoo DSL got people 10 mbps speeds, they'd put Time Warner out of business. To find out what your speed really is, go to: http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ This way, you'll have a better idea of what your speed really is. Look at it this way, it's faster than dial up, and cheaper than cable...and if you don't do a lot of online gaming, then you shouldn't be too bad off.
These are my results: 1.3 megabits per second Communications - 1.3 megabits per second Storage - 153.4 kilobytes per second 1MB file download - 6.7 seconds Subjective rating - Good What do you think jtotheb? I didn't know what kind of DSL Connection to use; so I used other/dsl connection. I saw SDSL and ADSL; didn't know the difference though? Did I use the right one?
1.3 Mbits/second is pretty fast for a DSL connection. Most top end DSL services for the consumer say they give you 1.5 Mbits (in reality a little less). Some services give you more, but they cost more or aren't consistently at that speed. I don't know what you're paying for, but the 1.3 Mbits/second is fast.
Right now, I am paying $27 (actually 26.95) but who's counting. However, that is after paying $27 for the first 6 months and $49 for the rest of 6 months in that year (a contract). Afterward the conract, I called and asked for the promotion at that time, which was $26 a month. I have a cousin that keeps my updated on the prices changes for DSL offered by SBC.
DSL is rated by speed. There's varying speeds based upon your proximity to the central office/DSLAM, blah, blah, geeky talk, etc. Usually they can tell you what speeds you should get. Some people can only get 768k download speeds for example. You're getting good speeds for DSL. SBC used to state you could get 6 Mbit/sec speeds but I don't think that was continuous speed. If you're getting a legitimate 1.3 Mbit/sec, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm paying $29/month through Verizon and I'm getting around 1.2 - 1.4 Mbit/sec.
