I have a quick question on Cuttino Mobley's contract. Let's say that he wants to sign for a 1 yr deal at the exception (estimated 2.6 mil for this yr.) In the summer of 2001, when he is sitting on the roster as an unsigned FA, how much does he count against the cap? Is it 200% or 300%? I remember when Barkley was unsigned a few yrs ago, he counted 300% of 2.2 mil or 6.6 mil, but this yr Bo Outlaw of Orlando counts 200% of his salary. Which one would Cat count at?

    MManal,

I'll attempt to answer in aelliots absence!

If Cat is signed to a one year Mid Level exception contract for $2.2 Mil (which I personally don't think he will, I think it will be 2 year early Bird for $3.9mil) then as an un-renounced free agent in the 2001 offseason he will count 200% of his previous salary, or 150% X $2.2mil = $4.4 mil.

He will be full Larry Bird eligible veteran, with previous salary less than the league average (average is $3.9 mil this year), and as per Question 25 of the Salary Cap FAQ,
    http://www.members.home.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#25

    ...will count 200%.

He would only count 300% if he was coming off a rookie scale contract, which he obviously will not be next year.

As far as Barkley's situation, I'm not familiar with it, but it was probably under the old CBA, and no longer applicable.

Hope this helps and apologies for jumping in aelliot's shoes.

Thanks for clearing that up Davo. The interesting thing I noticed is that whether Mobley signs for the 2.25 mil or the league average, he will still count roughly the same amount 4.5 mil on the 2001 cap. I noticed on your site that by the league average method, his projected 2001 salary is 4.5 mil.

remember also, that is only his "slotted" salary till he is signed. So, if we were planning on signing him for 9 mill (max) or so, it'd be smart to do what else we needed to do, then take care of him, as it'd save 4.5 mill of space.
