Does anyone know exactly what happens to the picks if the protection ends up applying? I know the Rox have an option to switch 2011 picks and if theirs is worse then the Knicks, nothing happens. But if the Knicks land the #1 pick, do we get future considerations to switch again or a pick outright down the road? Same goes for the 2012 pick. If the Knicks get a top 5 pick that year what do we get in return? Its possible if the Knicks dont sign two of the big FA this summer they could get the #1 pick in 2011 and a top pick in 2012. Where does that leave us?
The 2011 pick is an optional switch. It's top 1 protected so If the Knicks suck so badly that they WIN the lotto, we don't get a switch. The 2012 pick is a top 5 protected pick and If they do get a lotto pick in the top 5 we get a unprotected 2013 pick .
Don't know for sure but I would bet in order for the Knicks to only protect it for the 1st pick they said but if we do get the 1st overall pick than you lose. Of course that is just a guess. If it's not that then the only next logical thing would be to give us the same deal on their next available pick which would be 2013. As for the 2012 pick I expect that we would get the next available 1st roud pick which again would be 2013. Just guessing but it seems logical.
I have a question that I don't remember seeing answered. Regarding the Rockets 2011 Swap option...AFTER the 2010 draft has occurred, at that time the Knicks can THEN trade their 2011 1st round pick. So, if they trade with another team, let's say it's a good team, then that "Right to Swap" gets applied to that other team? Is this a way for NY to use the 2011 pick as an asset for themselves, whereby our "Swap ability" (which we still have the option) is not as appealing as it wouldn't be NY's pick, but some other teams?
I'm really hoping the knicks strike out in 2010 freeagency and up with a sucky team and the #2-5 pick in the 2011 NBA DRAFT
If they are bad enough to get a top 5 picks in 2012, 2013, 2014, I guarantee you that they won't finish in the bottom 5 in 2015. No team can be that bad for 3 years straight, not even the Knicks.
This is what I was trying to find out. Thanks for the thread. I'm pretty sure our right to swap will follow NY's record, no matter where it goes. So any team that trades for it will have to know there is a large caveat to it. Unless of course that team talks to morey into waiving that stipulation, thereby opening another opportunity for morey to fleece another team so that stipulation can be waived.
That's a good question but I think you are right. They could probably trade the pick with the understanding that the Rockets have the right to swap with them providing it's not the 1st pick of the draft.
Forget about the 2010 draft pick. It doesn't play into this scenario. It's the 2012 draft pick that matters. By trading away the 2012 1st pick, they can't trade 2011 or 2013 pick. If they traded the 2011 or 2013 1st draft pick, then you would have traded consecutive 1st round picks, 2011+2012 or 2012+2013. It doesn't matter that the picks are going to different teams.
I wonder how the Knicks will feel if we were to successfully be able to use their picks to setup a S&T for Bosh or Wade since they want to be able to get the most money AND play for a contending team. If that does go down, wonder how it would feel to spend all that effort, energy, and sacrifice, then watch your future get pissed away by the same assets you traded away. Must be one of those balls shrinking, chest tightening, and vision tunneling kind of feeling.
If I were a Knicks fan, the idea alone that Morey the wizard has bet against my team's future success would give me years of nightmares
