This is an off the wall question to Mormons and is not a criticism or value judgement about LDS or the Book of Mormon. If Mitt Romney were to win the Presidency as a member of LDS should he take the oath of office with the Book of Mormon or the Bible? I don't know what he did when he was sworn in as governor of Mass. Would it matter to the church which one he did? Rep. Keith Ellison took his oath using a Qu'ran and I have heard that Jewish elected officials have taken their oaths using a Talmud so I am just curious which holy book Mormon elected officials do.
Why does it matter what book he uses? As a side note, wonder why nobody has raised the point that using a specific book during the 'oath of office' may violate the separation of church and state doctrine.
Curiosity. Probably because the use of a holy book for the oath is both personal and purely symbolic. Remember when Chief Justice Roberts goofed when delivering Obama's oath of office? Even if he and Obama had completely gotten it wrong wouldn't keep Obama from being President on Jan. 22nd, 2009.
I believe Mormons take The Book of Mormon as another new testament. So Romney would probably use the Bible. but I'm not Mormon..so I could be wrong.
One could argue that using book symbolizes that that the President will lead this country based on religion. Sorta playing devil's advocate on a Friday...
Mormons believe that the Bible is the word of God but so is the Book of Mormon, Doctrines & Covenants and Pearls of Wisdom. So to answer your question, I'm sure he would use a bible. What translation of the bible he would use is more interesting. Most Mormons only consider the KJV to be inspired English translation.
I thought this would be a thread about the fact that The Book of Mormon is coming to the Twin Cities next February.
There is nothing in the Constitution or any USSC rulings that I am aware of that disqualifies someone from being president because of their personal religious views. The only religious limitations are political and not legal. As far as Keanu Reeves movies goes I am more partial to Little Buddha.
I think it would be really cool if he were to use the Book of Mormon, but one look at the base he's trying to polarize and I think it's fairly obvious he'd be coerced into HAVING to use the Bible. Just think of all of his supporters that would be up in arms about it.
Still waiting for a question about the Book of Mormon. You asked questions about Mit Romney and his church, but not the Book of Mormon.
Another no nothing about Mormons. I know Muslims consider Jesus a great prophet, but don't consider him God. They consider the Muslim religion to be a sort of new and improved version of the other two religions of the book Judaism and Christianity. Do Mormons consider Mormonism a sort of new and improved version of Christianity? Do the Mormons think Joseph Smith is a prophet? God? Is Jesus God or a prophet. Do Mormons pray to Joseph Smith? I guess I should refer to wikipedia but ....
George Washington added "so help me god" to the inaugaration speech on his own. it was final jeorpardy question answer that i figured out
A president is suppose to lead the country based on his beliefs. Is that not why he was elected in the first place? As long as the president stays in the confines of the constitution, he can have whatever beliefs he wants. Are you suggesting that only atheists and agnostics should only be elected?
i always feel kind of creeped out by most mormons i meet for whatever reason. they seem fine on the outside but there's always that something "human" missing from them. much like mitt.
