so i know nothing about these computers. my dad bought a new printer and i was going to install it on his mac but it said the os x version was too low.

looking into it, he has mac os x 10.1.5 and the printer requires mac os x v. 10.2.8 to 10.4x.

so what do i need to do to upgrade it? is it like windows xp to vista?

    will something like this work?

I take it you really need this soon?

Apple is set to release the newest version of OS X this fall and it does not look like it will disapoint. It would suck to spend 50$ here and then update again in a few months for 130.

What kind of mac does he have? Specs?

    it says powerpc g4.

yeah i looked on the apple website and saw that leopard os, looks very nice, but it's not something he needs. he basically browses the internet and stores and prints photos. i just want the cheapest upgrade i can get to use this printer. :)

OS X 10.2 was the first upgrade after the original OS X with the kind of extended capabilities it has today. Anything post 10.2 will be fine. You probably can find an older version online somewhere.

If you can somehow get your hands on the system CDs that came with a newer Mac with a newer OS, then you could upgrade it that way.

I did this to upgrade a bunch of Macs at work from 10.2 to 10.4.

Maybe you can check ebay for them. It might end up being you cheapest way to go unless you know someone else with CDs you could borrow. The only thing is you have to find out if his Mac can read DVDs or not because they started putting the system CDs in this format. If it doesn't you MIGHT find some in a regular CD format.
