Maybe somebody could explain this to me... How come the majority of the motels are own by Indians, gas stations owned by middle easterners, tire shops are typically owned by non Americans as well.. I don't want this to goto D&D so no immigration or racial stuff just wanna know why they buy these business specifically...

Maybe they are comfortable with these businesses and have experience in the field of work.

I know from personal experience. It's because if you can't speak English, you cannot work as a white collar professional. Thus you own your own business. You'd be amazed at the number of store owners that have advanced degrees from their home countries, but just can't get the work because of the language/cultural barrier.

Hmm, maybe they open 1 nail salon or whatever business in one area then they open another shop in a different part of town and make the brother/sister/cousin or whatever family member run the new shop. They try to keep it in the family I guess.

I used to see alot of white people walking into the Enron building in downtown many years ago. What's the deal with that?

It's basically this. Take Vietnamese Nail Salons for example. Someone about 20 years ago decides to open up a nail/hair salon. They are very successful at it. Other Vietnamese look and say, well, they're Vietnamese and they speak about the same level of English as I do and they can do it... so I can too. So they do it and lo and behold, they're successful. And then a bunch of others follow suit.
That's exactly how it happened in my family. I had a family friend who opened one 20 years ago. She was one of the first and made a fortune doing it because she had no competition. Nowadays they don't make as much money because everyone and their aunts are in it (including 3 of my aunts).

If he is being serious then Hicklander is about as ignorant as they come (based on his follow up responses).

Hicklander. Appropriate username for thread starter. :)

But I commend him for his curiosity though.

Like i said didn't want this to be a D&D thread.. I really want answers to this... The only answer I've gotten is about the Vietnamese and not needing to know english for nail salons..... maybe everyone should stop being so sensitive about stereotyping and help with my curiosity..

I'm not too sure about this, but don't legal immigrants get a visa for starting or having their own business in the US. Makes sense, come to America and start your own business so we can tax the **** out of it.

I'm not sure why everyone's so defensive about it. I was not insulted by the question. I've asked it myself many times.
