I need new brakes for my car. I called around checking prices and they say it will cost more if I need to have my rotors resurfaced. How do I know if I need to have them resurfaced or is best to buy new rotors. My hoopty is 8 years old so I don't wont to go to a brake shop and they tell me that my rotors can't be resurfaced and need to be replaced.
If they have super deep grooves it will be pretty obvious. The only real way to tell is to put a gauge on it and check them. If it was my car I would resurface them anyways. Brakes are the easiest thing to do. you should do it yourself.
Yes I was gonna try and do it myself with my cousins help. I rubbed my finger across the rotors and I could feel the ripples.
If your rotors are grooved, I would recommend you buy new rotors, it will serve you better in the long run. Sure, cut them down now, but in 2-4 months you'll end up having to replace them, or cut em down and put new pads on but your car will vibrate when you press on the brake pedal. Changing brakes is simple, but deadly if not installed properly, you & family will be driving the car, so if you do replace them yourself have someone there who has changed brakes before. Good luck, and have fun getting dirty.
you must have had some terrible place cut your rotors. automobile rotors have plenty of meat to be turned. NO WAY will they only last 4 months after being cleaned up. They will also be more true than new rotors in many cases.
It is no problem to get them turned. It will also cost you about 10 bucks. Just get them cut and then you will know they are good.
You can pickup a set of rotors from NAPA or Autozone for not much more than what you would pay to resurface them. If you do the brakes yourself, don't forget to burnish them. If you don't, they can warp quickly after replacing them.
I know how much it costs to turn. For an extra $50, I avoided a back and forth trip to the store, having to put her car on 4 jack stands and didn't have to worry about thinning the rotors passed manufacturer specs (which isn't hard to do with newer vehicles).
Most rotors cost more than 50 bucks (unless you get crap aftermarket ones) but 50 is already 5 times the price of getting them turned.
Rotors I got where drilled & slotted. $90 set of 4 shipped/no tax. Last time I had rotors turned at O'Reilly & NAPA, it was $7 a rotor and that was in 2006. Not sure where you are getting $10 from. Regardless, the extra money is worth it to me to avoid the aforementioned hassle plus knowing I have new thick rotors that have plenty of wear/braking power left on them.
So cut down rotors are almost the same as new? Haha. The rotors are cut down but they obviously are grooved in the first place due to brakes not being properly taken care of on time, I say 2-4 months because I'm going of the assumption that the brakes won't be taken care of , people tend to be repetitive when it comes to their cars, they either take care of them or don't until they have problems. Replace your breaks and rotors, it will benefit you in the long run.
You are obviously full of crap. What are you supposed to do in 4 months to "take care of" your rotors exactly? Rotors that are turned are not as good as new OEM rotors but probably better than some cheap new aftermarket rotors. It all depends on how much meat is left on the rotor after it has been turned down.
Speaking about the brakes and proper care, or F up your rotors again. TO OP: Check google maps and see where there is an "XL Parts" near you, like Autozone, Advanced Auto, etc. They sell better parts and also carry CENTRIC it's the more pricier parts but worth the $, p
