Remember when Barkley signed for the minimum in '99 (shortened lock out season) of $ 1 mil? He played one more partial season -hurt in December in Phil., then retired.

Did Barkley get a big reward for that last season in exchange for playing for 1 mil the previous season?

I remember Jonathon Feigen of the Chronicle saying that Les Alexander was very grateful to Charles for signing for the 1Mil min.

    Was Barkley rewarded well?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum- question about a former Rockets player........

Barkley got like 9 mil in his last year. Quite an increase from 1 mill. People who say Barkley was selfish or didn't want to win, are flat out morons.

For once kidrock, I agree completley with you. I cant think of anyone that took that kind of paycut just so they could win. And he did it so we could get Pippen, which was a horrible mistake. But even still, that was very bad ass of Charles to do that. I enjoyed his time with the Rockets.

dream took some cuts too through out his career.

When?? I don't recall Hakeem ever taking less money for the benefit of the team, that's why he was traded.

...not during his final contract year.

but in his earlier contracts he signed for less than what he was worth.

It was conventional wisdom during his last few big contract years that he was being compensated for his championship years even though his production didn't match it. It was just a perception, but I remember people expressing at the time.

Barkley's endorsement money always dwarfed his contract anyway, so it really didn't matter. He was desperate to change his image in his last year or two -- to think he was being purely selfless would be a little naive, I believe.

In 1990 through the championship years Dream was getting far less than he deserves. Charlie Thomas finally renegotiated his contract in 92 or 93 which helped a little bit but he wasn't paid his worth.

I remember Charles saying he had like 30 mil in the bank and wanted a chance at ring more than he needed the money.

it was wink-wink...Chaz took less that year for more the next. A wink-wink two year deal. He did all right.

Except in the locker room and on the court, that is.

But it was fun having Sir Chuckles here.

HUH!? Barkley never gave a crap about his image, what are you talking about? Heck he's been MORE controversial since he retired, look at TNT, look at the NBA Draft, and look at this SI article. That doesn't look like a guy desperate to change his image. Barkley was a good mentor to the young players, I wish Dream could be like that. Not saying that makes him bad, some people just aren't good at that, but Ming could have learned a ton from him. Barkley played very well for the Rockets considering he was in the twilight of his career.

Barkley only got 9 mill in his last season. That means he averaged five mill per. Saying that he took deferred payment or made out okay is preposterous. He was lighting it up before the injury. Dream signed a very long deal when he could, and others' contracts soon surpassed his. He was then allowed to renegotiate and later signed a huge deal. He in no way make the selfless sacrifice to his team that Sir Charles did.

Oh and xiki, Chuck played excellently during his tenure in Houston and only seemed to have problems with primadonnas like Clyde and Snottie Quittin.
