I just got a terrific Acer Timeline series laptop for $316 + tax. The laptop has very good specs and will last you up to 8 hours on a single charge. Much better and more useful than a netbook. But I got lucky with this one, it normally costs about $300 more.
If you think "quality" is a netbook, then yes. If you think "quality" is a 13" or smaller notebook, then possibly. If you think "quality" is a low-end full-blown laptop, then possibly, but you'll get ripped off on something. If you think "quality" is a gaming laptop, then, no. If you think "quality" is getting a 7200 rpm hd, a discrete video card, a 15"+ LED screen, 4 GB of RAM, and a real processor for development, running databases, etc., then, no (my current dilemma) All this assumes you want to buy new and not off Ebay or off some serial killer's ad on Craigslist. Right before Black Friday you could get a Dell Vostro 1520 series, I believe, with a good processor, good amount of RAM, and good sized hard drive for $399. The video card used shared memory, but that's still ok for most people. Keep an eye out on techbargains.com and gotapex.com for coupons and deals for Lenovo, Dell, and HP laptops.
Nothing major. Just something for my wife do to work on. The basics. And watch stuff on sometimes (i.e. old shows). Decent battery life. She has a older Dell now and it sucks. Takes a super long time to load up and stuff....
If there isn't anything physically wrong with the laptop, then you could just reinstall windows and it will be like a new laptop(unless its been slow since day one).
Bump: Best Buy has 3 gateways for under $400, and a Toshiba. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemp...terSP&sp=+currentprice+skuid&usc=abcat0500000 Has anyone ever had an issue with either one of these brands?
Shall I purchase the Toshiba portable PC for the purpose of viewing hulu.com in full screen mode? Or shall I browse elsewhere?
I have a dual core T7500 and it gets choppy running 480p fullscreen on Hulu. Atom processors (netbooks) and even the new U series don't handle HD flash that well.
Thank you kindly for your response, it seems as if I will require a vigorous prcessor and a large stick of RAM to satisfy my needs. I will have to review the recommended technical requirements at hulu.com.
Got an ACER TIMELINE 5810T-8929 a week ago for $307. Brand new from RadioShack. We have a model like it at Staples and it was a good $200 more. http://review.zdnet.com/product/lap...29-core-2-solo-su3500-14-ghz-156-tft/33712735 Not the most powerful laptop, but the Battery is INSANE. And for that price, also has HDMI out! EDIT: Ya, I got in on a deal at Radio Shack. Good stuff. They had the 4810T on sale too. Where did you get yours?
4 year old laptops are usually obsolete. you probably need to buy a new one cause it's probably not too much more than doing major upgrades. I suggest you get Windows 7 with it, since it runs way better than Vista.
