So me and the wife decide not to go out tonight. We really haven't done anything fun and wholesome together, that did not involve beer, in a good while. We decide to go to the local putt-putt for a easy, enjoyable time. We went a few years ago and it was cool enough. We did not eat dinner and we figured we would just grab a hot dog or nachos at the snack bar. But Noooooooo........

We get there and the place was again remodeled (no big deal, they do it all the time). The little snack area is gone and now they have a add-on restaurant that serves pizza and salads. Now when I say pizza, you can't get just a slice of pizza but you have to buy a whole pizza. And when I say salad, they had like feta cheese salads and crap. What the hell is that? When you go play miniature golf, who wants a freakin feta cheese salad? There were no hot dogs, nachos, frito pies, etc.??!! This type of stupid **** really pisses me off. I tried to blow it off but my wife was just as bummed as me, but she didn't really say anything at the time not wanting to complain.

I ended up just getting a coke for $2.15. Then we went over to pay to play some golf. It was $5.00 a person to play. That is not a big deal but after all the other stupid **** they did to the place we decided to just go home. The fun was gone and we did not want to play along with it anymore. It sounds stupid but my wife was almost in tears. It was just another thing that used to be cool being corrupted.

Just a few years ago we also used to go to Jungle Surf Water Slides down in Galveston. I had been going there since the mid '70s when I was a little kid. It was cool. There was a little deck area by the slides where you could bring a cooler, hangout and pay to ride the slides. We would go drink a little beer, go down the slide, then drink some more beer, go down the slides. All the while they had classic country and rock playing on the outdoor speakers. It was a great time. Then one day new owners took over, built a big fence around the place and hung up the "no outside food or drink" sign. Plus you could now only go down the slides in one position, sitting down or some ****. We have not been back since. I drive by the place now and just get depressed.

I guess I'm just rambling like a bitter old man, but now I'm back at home typing on my cpu instead of having some fun tonight. Next weekend we will just stick to the bars.

For those in Austin, the Putt-Putt there is still pretty old-school. Go on Sunday and it's all you can play for ($6.50, unless they've raised it in the year since I've been away). Not too crowded either. The refreshments are limited to things like snow cones and sodas from a vending machine, but they don't jack up the prices. Not too many frills, but good cheap entertainment.

When my great-grandma was a little girl, the man in the beer wagon would drive down her street and fill people's buckets with beer for a nickel.

Good thing that guy isn't around anymore, or we'd be in a load of trouble.

ISABEL, where is the putt putt in austin? ive been looking for one for a while. all ive found is the crappy peter pan golf on lamar and barton springs. that place is really lame.

MR. MEOWGI, the mini golf right next to jungle surf is still pretty cool. magic carpet golf i think its called. just watch out for the ant at hole 1. it shoots water at ya. :) that sucks about jungle surf, i used to love that place. havent been there in about 8 or 9 years though.

The Putt-Putt in Austin is on Burnet road, somewhere between Koenig/2222 and 183. (can't remember the closest cross streets... it all blends together up there anyway) I'm assuming nothing has changed since last August...

I think your overall experience of going out for putt-putt with expectations based on your old experiences obviously caused you and your wife a significant letdown. But, you'll didn't even play the putt-putt itself so that is not really what sucks. What really sucks is everything surrounding the putt-putt experience.

Maybe the putt-putt itself would have actually salvaged an otherwise crappy experience?

The best mini-golf in Austin is on Barton Springs rd. there is a big dinosaur out front, much better than putt putt. Across the street from that is a pitch and putt mini-golf course which is fun. Mr Meowgi are you talking about Sax's putt putt? :D

Who went to the one in Houston with the strange looking batting cages that was near a Toys-R-Us?

That location description doesn't help, but it might.

It was west of the loop I recall.
