Putin Orders Hunt for Killers of Russians in Iraq

Russian President Vladimir Putin told his security services to find and kill those responsible for the deaths of four Russian diplomats in Iraq, after Russian lawmakers blamed the U.S. for rising violence in that country.

Putin's directive will be posted on the president's Web site later today, an official in the Kremlin's press service said by telephone in Moscow, declining to be named. Russia's lower house of parliament passed a resolution earlier today blaming the ``occupying forces'' in Iraq for failing to protect people living and working in the country.

The diplomats were kidnapped in Baghdad on June 3 and a group linked to the al-Qaeda in Iraq organization posted a video on a Web site over the weekend purporting to show the killing of three of them. In an accompanying statement, the Mujahedeen Shura Council, a collection of insurgent groups that includes al-Qaeda in Iraq, said the fourth man also was killed.

``It is our deep conviction'' that the U.S. could have prevented the tragedy, lawmakers said in the resolution, which was supported by 425 of the lower house's 450 members. The killings ``were made possible first of all because of the growing crisis in the country as the occupying forces increasingly lose control of the situation.''

The resolution was initiated by United Russia, the pro- Kremlin party that dominates the lower house, or Duma.

The murders confirm ``the view of Russia's leadership and parliament that the forceful action of the U.S. and its allies in Iraq three years ago was a mistake,'' United Russia deputy Konstantin Kosachev, who heads the Duma's International Relations Committee, said on the party's Web site yesterday.

You should be careful about using the letters "SS". I thought you were trying to indicate that there was a Russian unit with similar traits to the German Nazi Schutzstaffel.

yeah i should have probably typed out security services, didn't even really think about the nazi stuff, but i was thinking of a secret police thing.

basically putin is sending russian special forces into iraq which has got to really annoy the bush administration and probably military commanders too.

Nation-states really aren't that different from organized gangs, the only difference is they're sanctioned and their actions are 'lawful'.

Why use a SS? I figure a Centerfielder could cover more ground.

There is no way Russia is actually sending any special secret police (etc) force into Iraq ~ this is just Putin acting tough for the masses.

They're already there and have been there since before the war even started. Russian, Israeli, Egyptian, Iranian, and Saudi intelligence agents are all operating in Iraq, they're all trying to secure a favorable outcome in Iraq for their countries.

Maybe... though it wouldn't be wise to forget where he made his name.

I remember hearing during the height of the kidnapping wave in Lebanon in the 80's that some Soviet diplomats were also kidnapped so the KGB kidnapped some major figures from Hezbollah leading the Soviet diplomats to be freed. I can't verify if that story is true but if so it shows that this kind of eye for an eye behavior isn't new to the Russians.
