According to the Dallas Morning News calls from this group are claiming to be getting money for Highway Patrol officers injured in the line of duty -- but the charity is not real.

An article in the local newspaper stated that while "Public Safety Services" has an agreement with some Police unions (there are many in Texas), this company takes up to 80% of the donations for themselves.

Austinpolice.com has an article on their website that states "Public Safety Services" is a "sole proprietorship" with an agreement with the Houston Police Patrolman's Union, which is allied with the Fraternal Order of Police, a group that seems to suffer from an addiction to telephone solicitation.

The contract the union has with Houston-based PSS says the company keeps 70% of the first $4,000 it collects per week, 75% of the next $4,000 and 80% of everything over $8,000 a week.

Plus, your donation is not tax-deductable.

Good looking out. I had someone contact my business (I'm in FL) saying we've donated $200 every year for donations for the local police force and in return we get advertising in a local newsletter or something. I took over the phone and started pressuring the guy, asked him his name, office phone number, name of the organization, and he wouldn't answer ANY of my questions. Not to mention he changed the story twice. So ridiculous. He repeatedly said just wait for the bill in 2-3 days that we're going to send and you can find our contact info on that. I told him I'm going to find the address on the bill and go to their office personally to rip it up in his face. Of course, we didn't get any bill.

In case anyone gets any solicitations, remember, the best way to donate is directly. No way would local govt agencies/non-profits hire 3rd party solicitors. At least not to my knowledge.

Wow. My dad's done this before (several years) and got the little sticker "law enforcement supporter 2005" etc. Looks like a star shaped badge...

I sent the info to him...

From now on I'm sure he'll just do the Harris County Sheriff's thing... 100 club? It's a legit deal.

It stinks that a "service" like this is around just taking advantage of people's generosity.
