I first heard some grumblings a few weeks ago, and then BAM!!!! All of the sudden its in every thread and talked about more and more every day. I say this, because alot of the posters, here on the BBS and in chat seem to be absolutely vicious towards Sura. "Sura is a ballhog" "Sura is a cancer" "Sura hates Yao" "Sura won't pass to Yao" "Rockets should trade Sura since he ignores Yao" "Sura only cares about his stats" I don't get it. This guy is playing on one leg and leaves his heart and guts out on the court, every night, no matter how bad we are winning or losing. I think this team is blessed to have Sura. I see Sura give Yao nice passes several times a game, not to mention the fact that Sura is not the primary post entry passer in our offense. Maybe some of our more level headed Chinese friends around here can explain where all this started? Im just baffled by this phenomenon
I don't go to chat because it's just a mess there and I haven't been watching the boards since a 2 game losing streak means that people will be screaming for "Fire Everyone", but that just seems ridiculous. Sura is one of the reasons that this team is doing as well as it is. I'm as baffled as you are, and I'm a big Yao fan.
Give it up Codell, you make the right point, but I think you put your finger on it: if there is any hate towards Sura (first it is stupid and ignorant, second it shows bias) then it is because of all the YOF lurking around the BBS. And if someone is a YOF, and thus are rooting for Yao instead of the Rockets, nothing they say is to be taken seriously at any level. I only take Rockets fans seriously
I think any poster who suggests that Sura is part of the problem is getting a beatdown from the rest of the board, so I wouldn't worry too much about it ! Sura has some limitations (injury and just talent-wise) but he plays with heart and he seems to get along well with Tmac and Yao. He is not a pure PG (he has revived his career by switching positions) but I have always liked his game... going back to Florida State (in fact I remember him in college better than Cassell ... and Ward was always and damn football player) and its not all the YOFs, just the few that are too defensive when Yao gets criticised (they want to jump to his defense and any excuse will do) I am a long time Rocket fan - I have Yao and Sura on my fantasy teams (I drafted too late to grab Tmac) - I was at game 4 of the 86' playoffs (Nicolson sunglasses night). I rushed back to my apt after college graduation to watch the "kiss of death" game 7 ! I go to 8-10 games a year. I liked Francis, but the Tmac deal is good long term and, as I said, I like the way Sura has redefined himself and his game. Now, I just hope we can get a young PG in here that can learn from the likes of Sura, Wesley and Barry - so that in 3-4 years, we have an unstoppable team
Really didn't want to turn this into a YOF thread, but I guess its inevitable since this appears to originate mostly with our BBS friends from China. Was just really curious what makes anyone think these things about Sura ............logic and what not
as I said above - I think there are some that want to defend Yao (he can take care of himself... with games like last night) - and since Sura is the PG, some might feel he needs to help Yao. I think its a non-issue. Sura, Tmac and Yao will be fine - as long as Barry, Wesley and Howard can hit all those WIDE OPEN SHOTS teams have to give them
Sura is just not chinese enough for some posters. If you can't apperciate what Sura is doing then I suggest that you pretend he is from China, and then you will be able to apperciate his play.
When players have good games their praised. When they have bad games their bashed. It's amazing how a players career can spiral so fast after 1 game. Such as life...
You blow it out of proportion. There are only a handful of posters who do this and by reading their posts, you know they are not knowledgeable BB fans. All you have to do is point out what is wrong with their logic and observation. No need to bring races into it.
Not all all. He keeps getting better as he gets farther from the surgery. In Mario's best year, he avg 11 ppg, 3 rpg, 4 apg in 34 mpg. He gets a bonus for providing a spark and hitting crucial 3's, but Sura's hustle is also a momentum-turner and his avg 10, 5.7, 4.7 in 33 mpg compares quite favorably.
I do not agree. Sura can not often play game well, especially on offsensive end, even though he could sometimes just like yesterday. But Yao can always help us a lot on Off in every game if Yao can be involved in our off efficiently. Nash's effect on S has alreday proved this point. So the problem we have is that we are sacrificing Yao's offsensive for Sura's several good plays. I think Sura'd better go to the SG and we keep looking for some decent PG to organize the off instead of Sura.
I LOVE Bobby Sura. I think he's as close as we've come to having a Mario Elie type player since the junk yard dog left town. Watching him dive for balls and wrestle balls out of opposing players with his injuries is just insane. Certainly we've had players who play with that intensity before and even now, such as Ryan Bowen, but we haven't had that combination of guts and determination AND considerable talent since Mario Elie IMHO.
Sura has been great this year, he plays with intensity and fire. However, when his leg is hurting and he is not able to push the ball and get into early offense we struggle. He is really the key to how well this team does.....if he is really that hurt, he may need some time on the IR to heal. Last night he was great, but the prior 2 games he was clearly hurting and not playing as well as he is capable. Sura is this teams engine, as he goes so go the Rockets. As for not passing it to Yao, he initiates the offense and his main priority at the start is to pass it to the side for a better angle into the post. In fact Sura passes a lot to Yao, just not right away, the wings do that. Sura....has been magnificient, I just hope he is not that hurt and can continue to push the ball, because clearly this team plays better at a little faster pace. DD
I don't think that Bobby is a poor man's SF. He has the heart and passion, but not the showmanship, dunks, and bad turnovers. He's more like a poor man's Jason Kidd, with the pass-first mentality, fast-breaking, and streaky (both good and bad) shooting.
Sura gives it his all every minute of the game. And he's smart. It only took him 20 passes or so to a player that has absolute brick hands to understand: Don't pass it to brick hands unless he's wide open, you must easily loft him the ball at 2 miles per hour, he has to be staring you in the eyes, you must hit him right in BOTH hands. If one of these conditions is not met - TURNOVER Sura is the X-Factor.
DanTanna, That is funny. You know how Larry Bird solved this problem, right? He consistently hit people in the head with hard passes in practice, and pretty soon, everyone was ready for a pass at any time. Yao needs a few passes off his melon...watch how fast his hands improve... DD
