I can't find any in town. I understand they are discontinued. Aside from Backwards compatability and storage, what ami I losing in getting the 40 gig? I really want BlueRay, and the backwards compatability was a bonus.
I don't recall off the top of my head all the things they took out besides BC, but I recall a Gamestop employee remarking on how "ridiculously neutered" it was. I'd just try eBay, it's where I got my 60GB... just make sure you get a seller that has $2,000 worth of buyer protection through Paypal, so you won't get screwed. Heck, looks like you can even still get a 60GB if you really want one, but you'd have to pay a major premium for it by the looks of it... If you have a little patience, I wouldn't be shocked if they announced a new model fairly soon, in the wake of the cancellation of the 80GB. I wouldn't get a 40GB.
There is not much of a difference aside from the two you already mentioned. I think the 40 gigs have a smaller processor which requires less power. There are 2 USB ports instead of 4 and no slots for flash memory (SD cards etc)
I've read about another larger capacity coming, but I've read it won't have backwrds compatability either and I'm a little fearful of the new product market price.
Then yeah, the 80GB is probably your best option. Grab one off eBay before the prices skyrocket even more because there are almost none left...
The 40GB PS3 also dropped the ability to play SACDs. Not too many people seem to be missing that feature though. Given your interests, it probably doesn't matter whether you wait for the new SKU or try to get a PS3 right now. I will say that the Game Developers Conference is this week IIRC. They don't usually make consumer-related announcements there (like new SKUs), but it has been getting more and more attention lately. FWIW, there's really no way to know for sure whether the new SKU will have PS2 BC, although I don't think it will personally. Just depends on how Sony wants to setup and market their SKUs ("elite" vs "barebones", or just 2 SKUs with different HDD sizes pretty much).
one of two things will most likely happen in gdc. sony will announce software emulation for ps2 games with a initial 50% or so compatibility or the new sku will be the same as the 80 gig, just a larger hard drive minus the motorstorm pack in. i'm not exactly sure when gdc is, but i think it's upcoming. microsoft might be announcing new xbox sku's as well, although i don't think much is going to change except the name and price (lowered).
I'm rrreeeeeaaaallly hoping the assumed new SKU features BC... because if my 60GB eventually breaks and I can't find another 60GB or an 80GB (likely), I'd feel really stupid having to buy yet another PS2 (if I had a Japanese PS2 already on top of that, it would add insult to injury). Can you imagine? I would own a PS3, an American PS2, and a Japanese PS2. God that would be stupid.
Why buy a PS3 when theres an Xbox 360. Xbox360> Wii> Ps3 PS3 = Republican party. Republican Party= Same of ****, new old white man.
It may just be blind optimism, but I seem to think that Sony will have some other way of providing PS2 BC before the year is over, either in the form of a new SKU or software emulation. Don't know if we'll find out about that at GDC though.
Wow, how mature. Btw....learn some english before you try to make a point. WTF were you trying to say?
I'm nervous about the purchase, but I just ebayed one for LESS than I would have paid local. His feedback has him selling other PS3's with positive feedback AND he has the $2,000 ebay protection. Now I'll contact him tomorrow. Bonus is Tara will go halfers with me on the purchase!!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160208598020
