This dead kid is the younger brother of my son's roommate. How sad: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=5186 Deputy Shoots and Kills Suspected PS3 Robber Brandon Hill (Blog) - December 3, 2006 11:05 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Rhoton boards up the door to his apartment the day after the shooting -- Image courtesy StarNewsOnlineRobbery suspect and his dog are gunned down in Wilmington, NC The PlayStation 3 frenzy took a deadly turn this past Friday when a sheriff's deputy for New Hanover County (NC) shot and killed a man suspected of robbing a UNCW student of two of the consoles. The shooting and the circumstances surrounding it have left many in the area puzzled. The story began on November 17: the US launch date of the highly anticipated PS3 console. On that day, UNCW student Justin Raines purchased two PS3 consoles from Wal-mart along with a few games. When Raines arrived back at his on-campus apartment, he was attacked with a blunt object by two men and his prized merchandise was stolen. Officers reviewed surveillance camera footage from the Wal-Mart and investigated several leads given to them. After the invesigation, the decision was made to serve Peyton Strickland and Ryan David Mills with arrest warrants on charges of breaking and entering, robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. When sheriff's deputies arrived at 533 Long Leaf Acres Drive to serve Strickland with an arrest warrant, Strickland was playing a round of Tiger Woods PGA Tour on his recently acquired PS3. The officers knocked on the door; Strickland walked to the door with controller in hand and opened it. "There was a bunch of yelling," said Mike Rhoton, a roommate of Strickland. "Four or five shots went off and they killed him. They pinned me down to the ground and told me not to move anything." There were three guns found in Strickland’s room, but none were used in the incident. Even more puzzling is the fact that police officers also shot and killed Blaze, Strickland's German shepherd. The District Attorney's Office along with the UNCW police department and Hanover Country Sherriff’s department are investigating the incident. "I am making this my top priority. No one's above the law. If there's any criminal conduct that can be established, I'm not going to hesitate to treat them as any other defendant," said New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David. According to the StarNewsOnline, Strickland was the youngest of three children and his father is a high-profile lawyer in the Raleigh-Durham (RDU) area.
if he wasn't armed when he went to the door i don't understand why he ended up shot and his dog too? doesn't seem like he was a good kid but it looks like the cops f#$ked up.
It sounds like they mistook his controller for a weapon. He just answered a knock on the door... with an object in hand. According to my son, the dog was shot first; he must have attacked the police and the young guy must have made a move towards the dog (and the police).
wait, so the kid (your son's roommate) was the actual perpetrator? i thought from the arcticle it was a case of mistaken identity. i'm not gonna say he deserved to die, but a good blunt object to his head would have sufficed.
It's my son's roomate's little brother-- living 200 miles away. Read the article. Peyton and his roommate were IDed by surveillance video and tracked down. When my son was 17-18 in HS, he used to give this kid Peyton, then 13-14, rides home to the mall, etc. My son was friends with Peyton's big sister who is now his friends-only roommate in Chapel Hill. My son says that he was actually there a couple of weeks ago, dropping by on a visit to Wilmington. He said that his friend (Nick) got strange "vibes" from the place like something was wrong. It sure ended up being wrong.
The cop should have used his taser and not shot the dog for sure but if the charges were true, that kid was a POS. I'm sure he uses those 3 guns for hunting and making the world a better place... The 2 guys who took my x-box 360 and a lot of other stuff from my apt... I would not feel bad for them if they found a similar fate. They made 6-8 arrests in my case and none of them turned out to be my guys (even though I have pictures of them!!), so they're still out there. I'm going to get those pics from the detective and blanket the Riverside student complex community with flyers of their ugly faces. That's the only thing I can think of at this point. Someone's got to know these guys.
Since 9/10s of the law of America is about property (or at least that's what we're told) isn't theft the most un-American thing you can do? Certainly the kind of person who can take something that doesn't belong to them (that isn't vital for survival) is the lowest sort.
I don't really understand the motive of the suspect also. What is the point? If he is poor and then he robbed PS3 and sold it for $$$, I would have more sympathy to him.
Sound like police with an itchy trigger finger and they got the wrong guy, I'm assuming...that sucks...Shoot first and ask questions later...
I posed this kind of question to my son. He surmised that the boy was just kind of spoiled rich and so was some kind of thrill-seeker.
oh...Well, then in that case, well, what an idiot...Too much force, yeah, but he still robbed someone...
You should of taken those 6 guys that got arrested and had them hung outside your place. It would serve as a warning for all that are near.
My brother-in-law just got robbed at gunpoint for his PS3 last night. But he does live in D.C., so it's not that surprising.
