Sounds cool except for the fact that it is written in code and do not know what XMB or trophies are. Whatever they are, nerdy updates are always welcome.
lol XMB or Cross Media Bar is the graphical interface developed by Sony. You can find this on PS3, PSP'S, PSX, Sony Bravia HDTV's Trophies are going to be similiar to the Xbox 360's accomplishments feature. The best thing about it for the PS3 is that it will enable in game messaging, which is a feature the PS3 severely lacked.
It has sort of been confirmed for about a week or so IIRC. It is just a matter of when the firmware will be released. Some recent talk seems to indicate that they might end up delaying it to next month (still tweaking things), but I guess we'll find out soon. I'm pretty sure Sony is going to make a big deal out of this update, similar to the update to the PS Store, so I would think they would have officially commented about it by now if it was coming out on the 10th. Firmware updates usually come out on Wednesday though, so maybe they could announce it later today or tomorrow, and release it Wednesday. I'm going to be pessimistic and assume it was delayed to next month. At least they got it working by the summer due date. I recall in-game XMB being somewhat confirmed for the major summer firmware a while back, but I wasn't sure if they'd hit it (see Home). Of course, it might be better to wait until we actually know all the details (what exactly can you do in the XMB while playing a game).
I just want in game messaging, that'll be extremely convenient when playing cod4, because party invites get cancelled or when you accept them sometimes your friends already joined a game without you and you cant get in. Rockband has in game xmb and its awesome
So essentially, I still won't be able to use the XMB to play my own music off the hard drive during gameplay, but I will be able to in future games? Or is this saying something totally different?
Doubtful. In fact, I doubt we'll even get it this week. Like I said, Sony will probably promote the release of the firmware on their blog with videos and stuff like that (similar to the PS Store), and they haven't even done that yet. Stuff about the PS Store went on the blog about a 4-5 days before the firmware was released for reference. Maybe next week, although I'm still expecting July (hope for the best, expect the worst). Pretty much. If you try to play Uncharted, you won't be able to play music from the HDD. But if Naughty Dog provides a patch for the game, then you'll be all set to go. Of course, if ND decides to support the feature for Uncharted 2, a patch won't be needed for that game. From a technical standpoint, I don't know if there is anything that would prevent the in-game XMB from allowing you to play music in-game, but there probably wouldn't be anything to stop the game from playing its own music. Developers would have to patch their released games in order to fix this issue, as well as any other problems there might be. BTW, one interesting feature in one of the newer PS3 SDKs allows developers to provide the ability for gamers to record and upload videos to Youtube. I think the new PixelJunk game will support this, and one of the Japanese PSN games already supports it (forgot the name, but it is the one with the cat...thing). It would be nice if this feature catches on with other developers since it could be really nice for some games (EX: LBP).
Sounds like there will be a video (or two?) that shows off the features in FW 2.4 late tonight (right before midnight Pacific) on the PlayStation Blog. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/29/playstation-around-the-web-what-we-read-5/
