http://www.gamespot.com/news/6182834.html Pretty great news. I started linking mp3s to my playstation but this would add so much more use to the feature. Hopefully it's not like every other PS3 feature that is "coming soon"
The firmware update that enabled this (2.10) went up earlier. Along with DivX playback, they also added VC-1/WMV playback. Didn't see that one coming. Can't really think of many other video formats I'd like. Here's a bit more about the changes: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/12/17/firmware-update-v210/ I tested a few divx and WMV videos, and they seemed to work fine. I don't think Stage6 works directly (need the web plugin), but I think you can play videos from them if you have a direct link to the video. Also, they added a new music visualizer as a stealth update I guess. It looks amazing: (pics from Dot50Cal from NeoGAF)
Just tried it out, works great with my Penn & Teller Ep. Gonna try it out with a flash drive, external drive, downloading from Stage 6, CD/DVD, and then finally see if I can set it up with the Media Sharing function, which I've had problems with in the past.
This is a pretty big firmware update. Now the PS3 is a Profile 1.1 player. All they need now is to enable DTS HD-MA decoding and it'll be a nearly perfect Blu-ray player.
Does this mean that you can put some Divx files liek a downloaded rockets game onto a USB -memory stick then you can play it on the PS3? Then i might have to buy a PS3, I'm kind of disappointed with the Wii I bought.
I'm going to try and see if you can stream it from your PC-PS3 without a flash drive, I see no reason you can't.
Ugh...looks like you can't. I just tried one of the Rockets games I downloaded, and it won't play (says data type not supported). Must be a particular type of DivX that the PS3 still doesn't recognize for some reason. I'm not really familiar with the process, so I can't really give a good explanation why. I think I did see some other people havinge issues with some DivX videos. So I guess there is another video format I'd like...the rest of DivX. Maybe it was just me...might try some other games later. If you were desperate, you could still stream it to you PS3 via your PC, with your PC converting it to an accepted format on the fly. BTW, apparently the latest updates for the PS3 and PSP now allow you to use Remote Play on all PS1 games, including games on discs. This was another stealth update apparently...I like how the two things they didn't mention about these update(s) are the things I like the most about them. edit: Saw this at NeoGAF: "DivX 3.11 doesn't work. XviD encodes using Custom Matrixes don't work." Guessing the Rockets games may fit under one (or both?) categories.
I tried to stream the batman trailer in 1080P which was downloaded to my comp(only 63 mb) and it worked fine.
what is the sound like on the ps3. i want a blu ray player but i wanna utlize my amplifer and speaker system
where did you get the games from? if they are mine, I encode xvid using custom matrixes. just ran the update and installed....adn the system isnt a brick, so far so good. Ill get around to testing the new aspects later.
I havent messed with the remote play or streaming on my ps3 yet, so Im not really in a position to test this....if I were to run a test encode without using custom matrixes, would you test and see if that is the issue? Id like to make these compatible with this feature as long as it doesnt require a total restructure of how I do them.
Sure, I can try to test it if you want. Maybe I don't fully understand what you want to do, but why do you need remote play and/or media streaming to test this? If I didn't make it clear earlier, I used neither when I tested a Rockets game earlier (just copied it from a USB memory stick). As long as that works, I don't see how remote play and/or media streaming could affect things. In fact, as I mentioned earlier, you can already stream Rockets games to your PS3 (or PSP via Remote Play) just as long as you convert it on-the-fly to a PS3-supported video format (think I used mpeg-2 when I tested this a while back). Of course, it would be easier if the PS3 could just play the video without any converting.
I've been hit or miss with the xvid/divx files I've tried. I think this is reason enough to change out my hard drive to the 160 and store all the media on the ps3. frees up a lot of space on the ole pc.
well, basically, Ive done nothing with my ps3 except play a couple of games, so I dont have a clue as to what you need to do for various other functions. Havent even cracked open the manual. so anyway, then forget I mentioned that...just an assumption on my part. Im doing an encode that is the same as normal, except Im not using a custom matrix. Im afraid that will impact the quality tho...will see in a few. Ill post a link to a fileshare service once its done. I dont have any codecs installed on my vid box that I dont use, so before I can test to see if maybe using Divx is the answer, Ill need to install and configure the encoder.
