So here's the problem. My PS3 which will be a year exactly on Christmas will not read any disc I put in. The person that give it to me for Christmas cannot find the receipt. My question is, am I screwed? Are there any fixes that you know of (cheapest)? My main use for it is to play Blu ray movies. What a sad day.
Buy a PS3 from Wal-mart now, wait til after Christmas and then do a switch put your old broken console in the new box and get your full refund.
You don't need a receipt. Call Sony and ask them to repair it, it might be still covered under their 1 year warranty.
I'll try this when I get a chance tomorrow. Hopefully it should be ok without receipt or I will have to raise hell.
I sent my PS2 back to Sony a couple times w/o the receipt or the orignal box and they fixed with free shipping and everything. The wal-mart thing doesn't work anymore as I think the employee needs to match the serial number on the PS with the box/reciept.
Can you get to the main screen, when you turn it on w/o a disc in it? If so, find the option that deletes the hard drive and resets the system. Yes, it sucks to lose all your game saves (back them up if you can), but it should make the PS3 work again. I went through the same issue a couple of months ago, and resetting the system fixed it. Can't promise it'll work for you, but it may.
Ask for the repair box so you can ship it before christmas comes, the ps3 only has a 1 year warranty i hink
Yes. If it's beyond the date they'll still fix it, but for about $120. The fix will be another unit swaped for your bad one. It will be the same SKU. My 60 gig bricked when GTA IV came out. They sent the box and I sent it in and I had a replacement in about 1 1/2 weeks. The replacement will also have a one year warranty.
I don't remember it taking 2 hours, but it did take a bit. You essentially start the whole machine over...you'll have to go through the setup process again once it's done reformatting.
I tried it, and it didn't work. I called Sony and they WILL charge me $150 to fix it. That seems like a lot even though it's a hardware problem. BASTARDS!!
When did this problem start for you? My brother's PS3 stopped reading discs just last week. It's having the exact same problem as yours.
Is that with the ONE-YEAR warranty on it, still? Why are you so upset? Just get it fixed. Maybe nicely tell the person who bought it for you so you can come to an agreement of splitting the payment? Just don't get upset over it... it won't do any good... just deal with it calmly. No use getting all " " about it. [knock on wood for my own PS3] - Anyway, you never answered if you can get to the main screen and it won't read discs, or it just won't start, or what? Do you get a specific error message on the screen? You have to let it time out for that.
It gets to the main screen fine. I can play my demo's and go on the internet fine. When I load a cd, blue ray, game, or regular dvd I just see that little icon loading the whole time. It tried loading for well over 30 minutes one time with no result. It was a $450 dollar gift. I'm just upset that Sony will charge for a hardware problem. I would understand it if it was my fault, but this is a known problem with the PS3 and they will still charge for it. I would expect a machine that cost $450 to last more than a year. Anyways, since Sony will be charging me $150 (Even though it is still under 1 yr warranty), I'm going to open it up and TRY to fix it myself. First I will clean the blu ray lens and if that doesn't work, I will swap out the blu ray drive. I'm hoping the cleaning of the lens will do just fine, and if all else fails, I'll send it to them to fix. ( All they do is send you a refurbished one anyways.)
