I just heard that Sony announced a pricecut on the PS3 of 35% (CNBC mentioned down to ~$450 or so - I think that's probably MSRP). I haven't kept up with all the models available (if there still are multiple models), so I don't know if it's across all models. Are NBA2k9 and Madden any better looking on PS3? I mean easily visible. I'm contemplating getting a PS3, but up until this point, the only reason I'd want one over my current XBox360 is for the next version Gran Turismo. I'm more into racing/fighting games and Madden and NBA2k-series. ** EDIT ** : CNBC may have screwed up the initial reporting of this. I'm still waiting for some confirmation. They may have been referring to the news ScriboErgoSum posted below and mistakenly called it a "pricecut".
Interesting. I expected them to do it for the holiday season, but I guess the dismal sales finally forced them to do it. I'm curious how this shakes out for sales in the next quarter.
Just found this: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3172076 Maybe they're dropping price because they can finally afford it. I overpaid for mine, but I'm glad I got when it still had native BC.
The price is what is keeping the Ps3 from selling more imho. I know my self and alot of other people are waiting for the price to come down. Sony tried to see who would blink first us or them and majority of the conumers have not batted a eye. Once Ps3 drops down to 249.99 there wont be a store able to keep them in stock. They may take a beating on the sale of the console but they will make it back with added blu ray pruchases, dlc and all the other garbage the push with consoles.
I wouldn't buy it without backwards compatibility. I haven't bought one, but had planned on maybe getting one after a large enough price drop because I like the FF series, but I already have more hookups than I have AV jacks. Sony you piss me off.
I've never understood the backwards compatibilty argument. Especially since the PS3 has been on the shelves for so long. When I get a new system, the last thing I want to do is play old ass games that don't look nealy as good. I don't know, maybe that's just me.
I used to want the PS2 compatibility but when I got my PS3 i ended up trading all my PS2 games in for credit towards new PS3 games. needless to say I was making a big deal over nothing. Every now and then I miss the PS2 games but not enough to NOT want to buy a PS3.
I love classic games. I have Final Fantasy I, II, & III and Chrono Trigger for Playstation (FF Chronicles & Anthology). I also have the Legend of Zelda Collector's edition(Original, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask) for Gamecube. For fighting/sports games I understand not caring about it, but RPGs are a different story.
For me, the only reason I'd get a PS3 is because one) I have a ton of spending money all of the sudden or two) mein PS2 ist kaput. I like my old ass games way better than I like any of the new games they've been coming out with lately... So backwards compatibility is the main selling point for me.
It's not really that hard of a concept to grasp. Some people have a significant PS2 collection that they wish to play whenever they want. PS2s do fail eventually. It would be nice not to have to worry about buying another PS2 if one is already in the PS3. A 35% price cut should price it around what it's worth. I'm still on the fence and waiting.
It is a matter of price, size, and available space. I only want a PS3 for FF13, and still want to play PS2 games. I really wish they would just put FF games on XBox360, rather than just FF XI, which is only on there because at the time they had the only good online experience.
I still like popping in an old PS2 game a lot more often than I play PS3 games. I only have 4 PS3 games (R&C, Uncharted, Resistance 1 & 2), but I have 30+ PS2 games as well as 30+ PS1 games. I have to say I enjoy the old games a lot more than the new ones, even if they don't look as good. Sony taking BC out was the final push that made me buy the PS3 (evil marketing tactic worked on me ).
I bought one when they still had SACD and memory card support. I don't care much about PS2 games because I have a PS2 that still works fine.
Awesome. I had just heard them say Sony exclusive on G4 the other day, but you are right now that I've looked it up. This makes me very happy.
Well FF Versus still seems to be an exclusive. I'm not sure if FF13 for xbox 360 is a timed release or not and also the quality might suffer on the xbox!
So far Madden and 2k series look better on 360. The football cutscenes have some kind of compression issue on PS3. But custom roster wise, PS3 is better. Although now you have EA lockers and 2k share.
Not only that, but PS3s can upscale PS2 games a bit, and hold everything in internal memory cards (which don't fail often, as regular cards do). BC is still to this day a big deal to me because, frankly, the PS and PS2 together have so many great games that no one could possibly have played them all yet. My collection is rife with PS2 games I haven't had time to play yet and am looking forward to playing... not to mention plenty that I often want to re-play.
am i missing something? assuming the current price of the ps3 is $499, 35% of that is $175. Should the price then be $325?
