Anyone in the know about this? There is a chance I could switch gears and get my son a PS3 for Christmas instead of a Wii if this is true. Question: How important is hard drive size on the PS3? Is 20-40GB worth $100+ more? Why/why not? http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/02/sonys-399-ps3-confirmed-by-best-buy/ Thanks to a helpful tipster, we have a couple of Best Buy documents showing a $399 Playstation 3 with 40GB disk and Spiderman 3 (yes, Blu-ray) bundle with an "In Stock Date" of October 28. However, the more important "Street Date" field is unfortunately empty at the moment. While the docs look legit and don't seem to be Photoshopped, they can still be faked easily enough. So we did a quick lookup on the UPC code and sure enough, while the details are masked, the manufacturer is listed as "Sony Computer Entertainment of America." Unfortunately, we don't see the new model CECHG01 listed anywhere in the docs. As such, let's be clear: this ain't official. Still, we'll be paying close attention on October 12th as will you we suspect.
I'd say 40gb is more than adequate. It remains to be seen what else is removed from the cheaper model (wifi?). How old is your son? The Wii may still be a better choice, but the novelty wore off really quickly for myself.
The rumors were talked about a little bit in the following thread: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=134581 Probably a good thing that we have a new thread to discuss it though, especially now that it seems to be more than just a rumor. Depends on what you want to do with your PS3, but the extra 20-40GB probably isn't worth it. And really, if you're in need of a lot of HDD space, you'd probably just get a much bigger HDD on your own for a much better price (either a internal 2.5" HDD, or an external USB HDD). I will say that I only have about 10GB left on my 60GB HDD, but I have nearly every PS3 demo downloaded onto my HDD, several video trailers (for movies and games), several movies I converted from my PC, some music, and some pictures. I guess there is also some space taken up by game installs and game saves as well. I'll probably end up deleting a lot of the media files since it seems easier to just stream it from my PC via DLNA though. That will probably give me back a lot of space. The only concern I would have about the 40GB PS3 is the backwards compatibility (or lack their of) with PS2 games. But not everyone is as crazy about that as I am (I still play PS2 games, and I will probably continue to do for a while). edit: I know there are some mixed reports about WiFi possibly being removed, but IIRC, WiFi was apart of the model that the FCC tested a while back.
I think parts are just getting cheaper and I believe they removed the PS2 chip and replaced it with an emulator. I wouldn't spend the extra money to get a bigger hard drive. By the time you actually use up those 40GB, you will be able to replace it with a much larger hard drive for a lot cheaper than what is available right now.
He's 12 and I've been concerned about the Wii novelty wearing off in a year or so. My feeling has been eventually the games will start using the full power of the PS3 and it's the better long term choice of the 3rd generation consoles. My reluctance to buy is based on the ridiculous price and lack of games. Regarding the HD size, does the PS3 allow externals? If so, wouldn't that make the PS3 HD size basically irrelevant?
Yeah, it can use pretty much any USB storage device AFAIK (USB memory sticks, external USB HDDs, USB memory card adapters, etc.). Plus, as I mentioned earlier, the DLNA stuff (if you get it working) makes HDD size even less of a factor.
That "full power" argument is rank BS. They said the same thing about the PS2 & Xbox... That said, the PS3 is the better long term bet than a Wii as far as gaming & an overall media experience.
Hmmm. At this moment, the PS3 takes the lead! Backward compatibility is sort of a big deal since we have a trove of PS2 games. But even if it isn't, the old PS2 is still working fine. The next week or so I'm going to dig into what games are available for PS3. Honestly, I haven't paid much attention till now because I just listened to everyone complain about the lack of games.
hmmm im selling my wii and was set on a 360 but now this? the gaming industry just never leaves me alone. lol
The PS3 and Wii are so different it's hard to really do the comparison. 399 will help, but the question is when that 'long term' potential will really kick in. I have some games I'm finally really interested in for PS3 - namely Ratchet and Clank and Little Big Planet - but it's hard to say when all the big games (other than ratchet) come down the pipe line (MGS and FF for example). I wonder if the game situation will be settled in as it was last gen: PS2 with the best library, while the XBOX - despite the better hardware - struggled with it's library. Current sales make it hard to say that everyone is just going to suddenly commit to the PS3. At the same time, while the Wii's sales are going to probably cause it to have a lot more attention, who knows how long it will take to start to see those titles. I have no doubt I'll have a PS3 at some point. But I'm not going to pick it up when there are just a couple games I want to play. Not if there's a chance that when there are a good amount of titles to choose from, I'll be paying less (say late next year sometime).
On a related note, I was talking with the manager at my local Gamestop (who I usually chat with as my girlfriend's son is looking at games). He told me that there are about 120 PS2 games that will be released in the future. If there are that many games slated for release for your old system a year after your new system launches, that is indicative with your new system.
Bingo. BC is a big deal to me, which is why I made sure to get myself a 60GB model. That's easily worth an extra $100 to me, considering buying a new ps2 would cost me more than that, and the ps2 can't upscale to HD.
Hmm...at this point, I'm not sure if there are a lot of great games aimed at gamers his age for the PS3, although I guess that depends on what he likes to play. Of course, there is your usual multiplatform stuff (sports games, Tony Hawk, Skate, Need For Speed, Marvel games, etc.), and Ratchet & Clank will be released this month (possibly bundled in with a 40GB SKU). The better PS3 games such as Resistance (M-rated), Oblivion (M-rated), Ninja Gaiden Sigma (M-rated), Warhawk (an online-only game), Heavenly Sword (T-rated), etc., may not be games you would consider purchasing (for him anyway). Granted, this will definitely change over time, but I thought I'd throw that out there. MGS4 should definitely be out in Q1 of 2008, along with LBP hopefully...and a bunch of other PS3 titles actually (although a lot of them are just 07 titles that got pushed back a quarter). Definitely no clue on when both FF games, GT5 (not Prologue, although I guess there is a question mark there on the the US release), and a few other PS3 exclusives (KZ2, WKS, and Tekken...though Tekken could go multiplatform) will come out. We don't even have the names for some of them, so it seems like it could definitely be a while for some of them. The sequels for MotorStorm and probably Resistance are scheduled for 08, although those aren't really solid dates either. Of course, I guess some games could come out of nowhere, similar to BioShock (maybe like Uncharted...although I'm not sure if that would really come out of nowhere). The amount of games still being released on the PS2 has little to do with the PS3 and its success (or lack their of). In fact, it probably has more to do with the Wii, along with other things of course.
The PS2 is still extremely popular and has a gigantic installed base (>120M). On top of that, since it has been out for so long it is very profitable. Sony would be dumb not to continue putting out games for the PS2.
small update.. http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/04/one-hour-later-40gb-ps3-rumor-returns-announced-tomorrow/ looks like its going to suck if we get the same thing.. no backward compatibility.. no memory card reader and two less usb ports?
For the sake of sounding like a novice, how do you do that, i.e. how do you download music and pictures on the HD...I've really only played games and watched movies and nothing else...thnx in advance...
