One of my friends just let me use his HDTV for the rest of the summer. I think it is a pretty low tier TV (Polaroid). Everything looks good and runs well on 480p, but when I try to go to anything higher than that (720p, 1080i), I get what can only be described as pixelated white lines and some interference. In details of games, images, and movies, there are jagged white lines on a lot of the details. These lines will kinda flicker/shine too. I can also see some "interference" in the logos on the XMB and in the background screen of the XMB. The inside of the images sometimes show graphical problems like static and discoloration. Can anyone put me on a decent path to try to remedy this? My first inclination is I need a new HDMI cord, but I'm not totally sure. What a faulty HDMI cord work perfectly on 480p, but then have problems at the higher resolutions? Or if it was faulty, would it just not work on all resolutions? Here a picture of some of the white lines while playing a rip of 40YO Virgin on my PS3:
What ALWAYS does the trick for me... When turning on the PS3, hold down the "ON" button for like 5 seconds... It will have beeped twice by then. Let go... This restarts the display settings. When I shift my PS3 from my plasma to my smaller LCD, I have to do this, so the video can recalibrate. Can't hurt to try it?
So you have tried 480p through HDMI? Is there no way you can test this tv with composite/component cables? Component allows 720p so you can see if the lines show up for that too.
The 480p mode seems to work fine. I do not have any component cables, only the PS3 brand composite cable and a ps3 s-video cable. I guess I could buy a component cable from the store, but I'm trying to figure out if I just need to buy another HDMI cable or if it is a problem that is PS3 or TV related.
How are you playing the "ripped" copy? Is it on a disc or as a file? I don't know how to play RIPs on my PS3, sir. I just wanted to know how you're doing it. Anyway, while you're playing the DVD or video file, press the /_\ green triangle. You're presented with a menu. Play around with the "video settings"... I believe there's a "mosquito" control there which may solve your problem.
Does this happen when you watch over the air HD broadcasts? Have you tried taking the PS3 and connecting it to someone else's HDTV? Does anyone else have a PS3 that you can connect to the same TV? No antenna? Try connecting your laptop to your HDTV and seeing if you get those lines at high resolution as well.
There's multiple ways. You can copy a movie onto an ipod, and plug it into the USB port and stream it on the PS3. You can stream movies through a wireless network from your computer, or you can save a movie onto the hard drive and watch it off that.
it's your friend's polaroid TV dude. if 1080i, 720p or 1080p doesn't look right, then something is wrong with the tv. try testing the ps3 on someone else's tv.
I don't have HD cable, so I have no idea if this would happen when viewing TV programming. I could experiment with plugging it into a friend's HDTV and even using his HDMI cord, but I wouldn't be able to do that for a couple weeks. Obviously doing something like that would be my preference because I would be able to troubleshoot each aspect individually (TV, hdmi cable, and PS3), but it isn't possible for me right now. I could try hooking my laptop up to the TV, but what type of cables would I use? I think I may go down to Gamestop and see if they have any used HDMI cables that I can buy and test out, that way if it still doesn't work I can return it.
Do you have an antenna lying around? You can just test it with over the air HD. I'm pretty sure that TV has a digital tuner and all you need to do is hook up an antenna.
i've never heard of an hdmi problem where people look like they are electrocuted on screen. it's usually a handshaking problem, you can't see an image at all.
No offense man but I think it's your buddy's Polaroid TV (horrible brand, insult to the company whose name it has before it went bankrupt). Use a different screen/monitor preferably from Sony (or the like) that has HDMI.
Like a few people have mentioned, it's your buds TV, have never had any issues with via HD content on my PS3
OK, I hadn't thought about just testing the PS3 somewhere else... sometimes after troubleshooting so much stuff, the easiest methods go out the window. Well, once it's been ripped onto an iPod, it's no longer HD, is it? I meant to ask what HIS format was. Also, I only wanted to know in what media or format he has it to watch on his PS3. After all, Blu-Ray or DVD discs contain FILES, right (.vob's, etc.)? I am wondering if ripping it onto a different format or medium would help.
Don't the files have to be a certain type to play on the PS3? I would love to play some of my avi and mpeg files using my PS3 but I just don't know how to do it or convert them to a format PS3 will recognize.
I believe PS3 upscales AVI files, so I always stream my divx movies over my home network to watch my movies. PS3 also supports .MKV files, which is the common format for HD rips. As far as getting movies and TV shows in that format, you should be able to find that in the usual places. It's nice being able to stream 720p and 1080p files over the network to my PS3.
LiL Pun, my PS3 can play those formats. I wonder if you're just DOIN' IT WRONG. I usually will just copy a file from my camcorder in AVCHD (*.m2ts) onto the PS3, and wham-o, it plays it. I don't need to convert. Sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_System_Software http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html
