I don't usually think firmware upgrades are worthy of threads, but I know some people were looking forward to these features:

Additionally, PS3 can now play back media content stored on a personal computer or digital video recorder with Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) capability over a home network.

    How is this possible?

I'll still be using the Toshiba XA2 player for upscaling SD-DVDs. It has the Reon chip which far outclasses the PS3.

What I wanna know is will this firmware update upscale PS3 games to 1080p in addition to PS1/PS2 titles? Or does it already do that and I wasn't aware?

Hopefully one of these years, Sony will offer an update that supports DTS HD-MA.

I believe it is supported now, but it is on a game-by-game basis IIRC; IOW, it is on the developer to allow for their game to be upscaled to 1080p using the PS3 scaler. I think VF5 and a few other games upscale to 1080p. This wasn't available to developers until earlier this year IIRC, so only the more recent games would support this I would think. I might be wrong, but I believe that is how this is all currently implemented on the PS3.

Have they ever fixed the option to allow for 720p Blu-ray playback (or whatever it was)? If they haven't, I'd assume this update would fix that as well, but who knows with Sony.
This is a global update, like all of the firmware updates so far, so it is for the US as well.

If someone else isn't all that knowledgeable on DLNA, I'm reading up on it right now and I'll try to provide any info I find that would be useful to those interested. I remember reading about the PS3 and DLNA before, but I'm not really sure how it all works.

Not sure. One of the big problem this takes care of is the 720p downscaling problem. Some older HDTVs do not have 720 so the PS3 downscaled games with native 720 resolutions to 480. Glad they finally took care of the problem.

These features will be more valuable in a couple years when wifi becomes more universal. It does make me wish i had a psp though.

RC, do you know what type of video files the ps3 can play? I have not been able to find that information. It would be amazing to be able to play all the stuff I've downloaded in torrents and through itunes.

So if the PS3 becomes a DNLA device, does a computer have to be DNLA certified to allow the two to access each other? Is there a DNLA router?

    It supports the following formats:
    MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC)

    MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
    MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)

    AVI
    Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
    Motion JPEG (μ-Law)

    AVCHD (.m2ts)

I'm still looking into the DLNA stuff.

It seems there are two categories:

Digital Media Storage DMS and Digital Media Player (DMP)

All devices are a apart of the network and it is possible that a device can serve both as a DMS and DMP. For instance, the PS3 can both be a Digital media player and also store digital media for use by other DMPs on the network.

From what I can tell, there are servers you can buy that are DNLA certified that will function as a DMS. I don't think there is a way you can make a home computer a DMS.
BAlllzzzz. I was hoping to be able to tell Apples 200$ I-TV to suck it. Doesn't seem like I can use the system.

No, I think you can make your PC a server, as long as you have the right software. Such as this:
    http://www.twonkyvision.com/Products/TwonkyMedia/index.html

Or at least that's the impression I'm getting. I'm trying to see if there are better solutions than this though (Windows Media Center supports DLNA for example, although I don't know if it would work with the PS3) , especially when you try to consider what the PS3 is able to do. BTW, the way it was worded, it sounds like the PS3 can only play media on a DLNA network and not act as a server (like your PC could). Maybe in Linux though...actually, I think they already had DLNA working in Linux on the PS3, but whatever.

You can download free software that converts anything into PS3 loadable content. Even HD quality.

For those asking, DLNA is a technology or consortium that got together to create software that can turn your PC or, even better, a NAS, into a media server. This is what I've been waiting for because it puts the PS3 on similar footing with the XBox 360 if your main goal is to access a ton of media files from a remote machine.

I've been hoping they add this feature.

Where is the software you need to put on your PC for this capability?

So are there still PS2 games that the new PS3 aren't compatible with?

I wonder if it can upscale all DNLA content too.
