Ever since firmware update 2.20 my ps3 fan is noticeably loud. It's starting to get real annoying. My PS3 is sitting out in the open and my house is pretty cold (68 degrees) so I don't understand why its blowing out air like its 100 degrees or something. I've tried alot of things, sitting it horizontally and vertical. Nothing Works. When I first power it up, its dead silent then within 5 minutes the fan kicks on and gets annoying. Before 2.20 it was dead silent. I bought this ps3 in february and haven't had problems. I called Sony and they offered to exchange it, theres just a few problems. Since they don't make 80 gig ps3's anymore, they want to send me a refurbished one and I've heard of people getting back ps3 with scratches all over the place, and I wont get it back until May if i choose to send it in what do i do? Stupid Sony Style store wont exchange it... any stores that will replace a system without a receipt.
Hmm... I thought it was just me. I'm having this happen too. I put my room fan directly on the system and it still keeps running loud. I felt behind the system and don't feel any heat.
has it been since update 2.20? its really annoying, i can't enjoy games anymore cuz of the damn fan, it gets especially loud during cod4. Before 2.20, SILENT, i had to put my ear next to the system to hear it.
I hate to join the crowd, but I have noticed the same thing. It only happens when playing disc-based games. (I play WAY too much Pixel Junk Monsters) It's happened during CoD4 and Uncharted that I've noticed. The update came while I was on vacation and I attributed the noise to me taking the PS3 with me, but I did not notice it until I was plugged back in and updated. I have a 60 gig.
looks like if you were to try to return it, you would be screwed as well. They stopped making 60 gigs a while back. I really think its that damn update, and i dont want to have to wait a month to get a refurbished ps3 because of it.
I just found this http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache...loud+ps3+update+2.20&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us (url is from google cached, the EU ps forums are down)
Sounds like a lot of people are having the same problem so getting it exchanged or whatever might not solve anything. I"ve been having the same problem as well.
I've heard that the 40gb PS3's are extremely quiet. I've never heard one since my friends have 20gb,60gb, and 80gbs. Supposedly the 40gb uses parts that are made in a different factory than the other versions.
The 40GB PS3 has a smaller version of the Cell processor, and a couple of other changes were made to the internals to minimize things IIRC. Because of this, it needs less power and creates less heat, making the fans a little quieter than the other SKUs.
I had a 20 and a 60. The 20 was quieter. Anyways, I have heard about that problem with the update. Also COD4 seems to be bricking 60/20GB PS3s at a somewhat alarming rate (considering the PS3 never had a bricking problem). So beware. If you get a yellow light its over.
I'm going to wait til tomorrow for update 2.30, hopefully this fixes it. So there's a Yellow light of death? lol COD4 is making the fan kick up like crazy. Just as loud when you are folding @ home. I tried a hard reset last night, im at school right now so i'll just check it out later hold the power button on the front for 10 seconds you'll hear several beeps and just wait until it completely shuts down after powering on
anyone else still having this problem? update 2.30 has fixed this for me (knock on wood) now the fan only kicks up when ive played for hours, instead of 5 minutes
My PS3 has never been overly loud, I don't think. Either that or I'm just really oblivious. I certainly notice when I'm powering off that it's blowing out a lot of heat, it's a very active fan... but it seems like it's just doing its job and doing it well. Whenever I played on my brother's 360, I once again appreciated how quiet my PS3 is. 360s get crazy hot/loud, in my experience. Sounds like a plane taking off.
