Reuters I guess at this point I'm a casual gamer. I used to be hardcore, but then realized I would easily let it take up all of my time so I've avoided this generation of consoles. But at $199 I would definitely pick one up just for the occasional game. But is this realistic at all in the coming months? Or is this wishful thinking from game developers who want to move copies but don't have to deal w/ the loss of selling hardware (I'm assuming all consoles are sold at a loss)? Would the increase in sales of games by Sony and Microsoft offset a further loss on the price drop of a console?
It said over the next two years. I don't see it going to $200 anytime soon. That is a DRASTIC price cut and these gaming systems are much more than gaming systems these days. I think sub $400 is a fair price for what you get. Not everyone can afford a gaming system. That isn't a horrible thing.
no way in hell it drops under 199 anytime soon. Maybe a 20 gig bare PS3 for 249 and a core 360 for the same. But who the hell would buy that?
I'll even add to that a little bit. I think sub $400 is a fantastic deal on the PS3. I have been a pretty strong 360 supporter but I bought a PS3 this past weekend and it is a really great system for $400 (I bought the 80gb version though). I love my 360 and I wouldn't get rid of it for anything, but when you add up everything (Xbox $350, HD-DVD $200, Wireless $100) you have to get to match the PS3, $400 to $500 is a bargain. I still think that the 360 has better online and a much better library but I really dig my PS3.
inflation, inflation, inflation...a few years ago when ps2 did their price cut at 200 it was perfect because money was worth more at the time. i dont see the 360 going lower than 250 anytime soon. beside these machines do a lot more than the previous gaming systems.
I'll probably never own a PS3 or 360. The price jump this round pretty much priced a relatively casual gamer like me out.
Does anybody else think that having three different versions of the same console was a bad idea? Having to stock the different components for the different systems increases production costs, which adds to the price of the final product. Plus, I think it creates confusion for the consumer. For a lot of people, it's either buy the cheap ass system, or wait for the more expensive system's price to drop. If the company sells a lot of the cheap systems, it won't be able to afford a price drop on the more expensive systems.
no kidding, the 20GB PS3 model was so pathetic it got phased out in what 6 months? The 360 core version had like probably 5 people who bought it and then returned it when they realized that there was no HD
He's right, but like he said, it'll be years.... I still don't get how people compare the Wii to the PS3 & 360...totally different concepts and the Wii isn't even in HD...To me, they are overpriced for what you get...Good for Nintendo...Funny thing is, you still can't find them in stores...
For me, the Wii is wildly overrated, and this is coming from someone who's had his Wii console for a while now. Its a great party game console, but other than that it just seems like the novelty of moving my arms around has worn out. 360 and PS3 offer more value for what you get imo.
I think that's the point. It's kinda like saying the Prius is overrated, its great for saving money on gas but other than that it doesn't do much else.
I was about to be pissed. I just bought my 360 about 6 months ago, lol. It already dropped to $350 about a month after I bought it.
Got my son a Wii last Friday (for Christmas). I plan on getting him a PS3 within a year or two or three. The timing depends on how many good games come out for the Wii. If both the PS3 and Xbox360 drop to $199 within 2-3 years, we'll get all 3 consols.
I've come to grips about what the Wii can do and what games will do well on them. I'm having a blast with Galaxy, Metroid, and can't wait to buy other games that will work well on the Wii, like Medal of Honor 2, Zack and Wiki, and Umbrella Chronicles. That said, I know what the 360 can do since my roomies have one and I enjoy seeing Mass Effect, Halo, and Bioshock on there. So...hopefully someday the 360 can drop to 199 so I can pick it up and have the best of both worlds.
Maybe I'm alone on this, but IMO the 360 beats the other 2 next gen consoles in a landslide...I have zero desire to get a PS3 or a Wii.
I was thinking the same thing. $199 today just isn't the same as it was 5-10 years ago. I'd be very surprised if they can slash the price to that point. Well, I guess they can make each game cost like $100 to make up for it, but that's not going to happen. Personally, I'm waiting for a console-selling game before I'm buying. I haven't seen one yet from either the PS3 or Xbox 360. And Wii just doesn't do it for me.
