...is going into "greatest hits" mode?

    Paging RC Cola!

I'm looking to get my kids some PS2 games for Christmas, but would like to make the dollars stretch...

How do I find out which games are about to become greatest hits (under $20), or even drop lower... aside from the "black friday" sites?

Thanks in advance, if you see this (and you know...hence posting the info).

Nice tip... but the 7 & 4 yr. old can't play that! ;)

I'll check the link for more.

There's not really a way to know for sure if a game will become a Greatest Hit anytime soon. Kind of like when looking for console price drops, you can guesstimate when/if it will happen, but you won't know for sure until it is officially announced (or leaked). Sometimes, you'll see retailers start selling $40-$50 games for $20-$25 shortly before a game officially becomes a GH (as was the case with God of War), but that doesn't always happen (and not all retailers will do this), nor does it happen long before the move to GH occurs (GOW was like a few weeks IIRC).

There are certain requirements for a PS2 game to be part of the GH collection. From Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sony_Greatest_Hits_games
So I would say that if a game has been out for fewer than 9 months, or if it has sold poorly, chances are that it probably won't join the GH collection anytime soon (if at all). Some games, like God of War and GT4, might be published by Sony, but they'll still wait longer than 9 months to put them into the collection (mostly because they're still selling well).

It is pretty tough to figure these things out, outside of some obvious games (such as KH2, FFXII, or the newest SOCOM, but even then you don't know exactly when they'll go GH). If it was easy, then no one would buy the games until they went GH. :)

So then, is there a link to somewhere that shows numbers of copies sold? Like a top 40 list or something?

Just check out all the sales thread I make and add up the numbers. ;)

I tend to use this site:
    http://www.vgcharts.org/
It is based on pretty much the same data I use for the sales threads (just better organized). It isn't up-to-date for every game, and even if it was, it is still estimates about estimates (although very good estimates).

Sales for video games are normally pretty hard to find. Technically the numbers I post every month aren't supposed to be given out (unless you're willing to pay a couple grand a year IIRC).

I've talked to a game stop employee before to find out. I think their corporate office do know a few weeks ahead of time (because the sony reps would go to them) so they can stop taking in trades at a certain price. Though in general, I think most of the time you just don't know.
