Okay, I know I'm going to buy one of these systems, but for the life of me, I can't decide! PS2 Pros: - lots and lots of games I want (Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Suikoden 3, Silent Hill 2, GTA: Vice City, Grandia 2, GT3) - my mother has already bought me two (of the above) PS2 games for Christmas because I said I was going to buy the system after the holidays Cons: - expensive ($300 Can. for system, $35 for memory card) Gamecube Pros: - Metroid & Zelda - substantially cheaper than PS2 ($230 for system, $25 for memory card) - Gamecube games in general are about $10 less than PS2 games Cons: - only one game so far that I want (Metroid Prime), but I want it really, really bad Miscellaneous: - X-Box is not an option for me - I don't really care about the PS2's DVD playing capability - A lot of PS2 games seem to be being ported to PC (GTA3, Grandia 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, probably FFX) - I don't like the Resident Evil series at all Arrrrgh... I hate making decisions like this!
before metroid prime came out i'd say ps2, but prime is truely about as good as a game can get. really amazing. the cube has some pretty sweet party games as well, smash brothers and supermonkeyball. downside is no vice city, final fantasy X, twisted metal on gamecube either. i guess i'll recommend gamecube but if you could get x-box i'd easily choose that any day of the week.
PS2's online is very nice. Gamecube as like 64 will have better games than Playstation, But Playstation's selection will be so much better. Gamecube tends to normally gear towards kids. I like how Gamecube plays, but PS2 is just way more sophisticated and overall better.
Square and Nintendo have reconciled their differences. Look for a Final Fantasy game on Gamecube and GBA soon... Nintendo sold Rare to Microsoft, and I think that's a mistake. If you don't know who Rare is, they made Star Fox Adventures for GC, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, and Conker's Bad Fur Day for N64. Like Christopher said, buy the system with the best (exclusive)games. Without Rare, Nintendo loses a bit of their edge, unfortunately. However, a LOT of games are coming out for all 3 platforms now, so that helps Nintendo greatly. Plus, they have some great exclusive titles coming out in the near future, like Zelda, 1080: White Storm, the Hobbit, etc. As for now, you can't get Mario and Metroid Prime on any other system. Because of that, Nintendo (at least for me) is the way to go. (Of course, if I want to do online gaming, Nintendo is not the system to get.) By the way, I'll wait for the eventual PC port of GTA: Vice City, thank you very much...
I haven't played GC, but I couldn't be happier with anything else, IMO. I love RPGs and the PS2 pretty much dominates in that genre. FFX, Suikoden 3, and Grandia 2 are some that you mentioned that I like, but there are plenty more coming. I ,personally, can't wait for Xenosaga. However, they also have games for my second love: sports. Madden, 2K, Live, etc. The GTA series is doing well, and although it does seem to get ported to the PC, this takes a long time. I think GTA 3 came out just a couple of months before GTA:VC came out for the PS2. Just my opinions. I think some stores let you rent consoles, or used to anyways. You could then rent both the GC and Metroid and play it for a while. Don't know how much it costs, though.
I heard that too, but I don't think they are going to be Square's main focus. As far as I know, the FF series will stick with Sony, but they will release some other Final Fantasy's for the other 2. I think the GBA one will be like FFT.
RC -- I'm a major RPG nut too. I can't believe I forgot about Xenosaga. I liked Xenogears a lot (the first disc, anyway), so that's a big plus for the PS2 in my mind. Star Ocean 3, Silent Hill 3 and Tenchu 3 all should be out in 2003 as well. There's no question that the PS2 has a greater number of quality games. Also, Zellers is having a sale this weekend. For this Saturday and Sunday only, the PS2+one controller will be $280CAN (limit one per customer). This seems like a good opportunity to get one. I just need to talk myself into it. I think you have a good idea about renting a Cube & Metroid sometime down the road. I never thought of that.
I think the Final Fantasy game that was speculated to be for GameCube was to be called "Final Fantasy:Crystal Chronicles" but I read somewhere that they're having some sort of problems with negotiations or whatnot and may put the project on hold indefinitely.
Man, that is a question that will haunt the minds of many gamers for years to come, Nintendo or Playstation? We have a GC at my house, but I can see how I could be equally happier with a PS2. My friends who are all hard core gamers just ended up buying both, but not at the same time mind you. I got the GC this summer and this Christmas, we may get the PS2. I know many people aren't that lucky, but hey, what can I say. There really is no way you can ask us which system is better because they obviously all have their pros and cons. You just have to decide which exclusive games do you really want the most and get the system that they are for.
Gamecube wasnt even an option in my book, it was either ps2 or xbox, i went with the ps2 cuz i knew they were going to have a wider selection of games at the time of my purchase and the online capability was going to come along, wish i could get an xbox but that wont happen. Any of you guys have the online adapter for ps2? i am suppose to be getting mine monday, is it good on 56k? i know it would be better on cable but is it ok on 56k? thanks for any responses.
I would go with a Xbox, games Splinter Cell(I have MGS2 and Splinter Cell is better), Halo(better than anyother game on PS2), Mechassult, and much more.
IMO, Metroid Prime is the best game I've ever played. For that reason alone, I'd go with GameCube. The loss of Rare only hurts because of the ensuing loss of Perfect Dark Zero.
I have Xbox and PS2 and I still like PS2 better, although Halo is amazing. PS2 just offers more quality games plus it has the $20 Greatest Hits collection angle...so sweet.
PS2. So many great games that aren't on GameCube(I think.....). NCAA Football 2003, GTA 3, GTA Vice City, etc.
