My opinion is that each team should have the chance to review 1 call per half (or any other reasonable amount). 1) During a review, if a ref deems that a player flopped, a delay of game should be called against the flopping team. As we all know, 2 delay of games = technical free throw. 2) If the foul is deemed to be a foul, a delay of game is called against the team calling the review. 3) If the foul was neither a foul or flop, the play continues as if no call was made and the delay is registered as an official time out. Thoughts?
Nice try, but this will only serve to extend the game and the NBA doesnt want to do that. This is not the NFL where you already have 30-45 seconds between plays.
I'm sorry but the whole thing about it's hard for refs to judge whether it's flop or not is a downright lie !! Even a stupid person can see a flop from miles away, the refs just consider which player it is, which team he plays for and such to determine whether he calls it or not. Reviewing plays will not change that, they will still lie because nobody holds them accountable. To me it's more serious than just calling flopping and fining, to me it's a thing of referees doing their jobs like any other human being to the best of their ability. These referees should be fired if they lie, just like a judge or lawyer in court would be fired if they found out he lied. It's like any other job, why make a difference between sports and any other occupation. The NBA should be more like Football (or what you Yanks calls soccer ) where a bad call is always reviewed and could cost them refereeing the teams involved for a few games or just the next game. It should go further but it's at least a start. Also with regards to flopping it should be like football where when somebody clearly tries to sell a foul or falls down (flops) he gets a yellow card (two yellow means ejected from the game so like a technical) Can some1 please explain what David Stern has changed in the rules regarding flopping because I haven't seen anything different from last year.
How about give each team 1 review for the entire game?It wouldn't extend the game to long and could help out big time especially in the 4th quarter.
I like the idea of reviews, but they shouldn't be used for foul calls. They should be used for calls like goal tending, shots near the buzzer, if a player was out of bounds like Finley in Game 5. As for flopping, I would just make up a new violation called the (gasp) Flopping Violation. If a team is on offense and a player on that team flops, the ref calls a flopping violation on him. Punishment is a loss of possession, so the player gets a turnover. If a player flops while on defense, the punishment is the team on offense gets one free throw and the ball, with the shot clock reset. No fines, no personal fouls, and no technical fouls - those are all going overboard. What wouldn't go away is the controversy. It's still a subjective decision by the ref on what was a flop and what was a legit charge.
The problem with this is deciding when to use it. It could easily be used early int he game, but most coaches would probably save it for the final minutes and even then a flop may not happen, so it probably will end up not being used for most games. It only would work effectively if they could challenge a couple calls, but the NBA wont go for that because it will stop play too much. As for calling flops, they can be hard to judge SOMETIMES. Some are definitely obvious, but when you have someone like Yao using his shoulder to lead, and he basically gathers himself and then rams into a defender with his shoulder, he makes it too easy for the defender to fall back the moment Yao's shoulder hits him, in full speed it can definitely appear that Yao hit him harder than he really did.
Lets see if they overturned 2 flops last night against the Jazz we would have 1 free throw and 200 other flops that we couldn't review.
