So based on where I live in Harris County I think I have calculated the property tax rate to be 2.524231. My house has a homestead exemption on it so only part of it goes to each of the following taxes. Houston ISD 1.1567% Harris County 0.38805% Harris County Flood Control Dist 0.02923% Port of Houston Authority 0.02054% Harris County Hospital District 0.19216% Harris County Dept. of Education 0.006581% Houston Community College System 0.09222% City of Houston 0.63875% Total Tax % 2.524231% Is there a good way of knowing how much homesteading saves you. I hope to buy a house in the 400K range and want to get a good estimate on taxes assuming I homestead it. I know... boring topic but would appreciate any help you guys can offer.
I'm interested in knowing this as well as I'll be purchasing a house in Memorial area within the next year at around the same price range.
Wiki: [rquoter]Texas - Allows a deduction equal to 20% of house value. Additional exemptions are available for county taxes, people over 65 and people who are disabled.[/rquoter]
Another thing is to remember that different School Districts tream the homestead exemption differently. One might give you 15% off your appraisal. Another may be a flat $15,000 off your appraisal.
