Pronounciation of EMU

I thought this was a post about Eastern Michigan University.

 

When I saw this thread, the first thing I thought about was The Wiggles.....

I want to know the proper pronunciation of Xavier.

Al Jaffe says you don't pronounce the "x"

But for me, it is instinctive. I always say "x-zavier"

I have heard 3 ways to pronounce it:

X-Avier
X-Zavier
Zavier


Which way is right?

 

How does one say "nuclear"?

 

Is it championSHip or championCHip? I swear I've heard both ways before.

 

...so, what's the correct pronounciation of "anal retentive"?

 

And, if the President of the United States pronounces it the other way, does that automatically make it the new correct way?

 

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary has the following pronounciations:

Pronunciation: 'zAv-y&r, 'zA-vE-&r, ig-'zA-

I guess the question is whether that 3rd one is correct. I'm not sure. I noticed that pronouciation was missing from the American Heritage Dictionary.

 

It worked for "normalcy."

 

The Name Xazier is pronounced X-Zavier, but the School is pronounced simply "Zavier"
