Did anybody catch this documentary on HBO last night because I missed it. It tells the story of a high school in Mississippi that had two proms, one for white students and one for black students. In 1997, Morgan Freeman, who lives in Mississippi and close to the location of the school, told the school he would pay for the prom if they integrated it. Well, they finally took him up on that offer in 2008 and had their first integrated prom. At least that is the story I am getting from what I read about it. Did anybody catch it?
I watched it last night. It's good and worth checking out. It's really disturbing to think there are still schools in America that have a seperate prom for white and black students in 2009. Just to see how backwards many of these adults are and the fact that they are passing that same kind of hate on to their kids was hard to watch. I felt sorry for some of those people for being so ignorant.
From some reviews I read, that was something that was missing, coverage of the white parents/students who were against the integration of the prom. In fact, I read that the white only prom was still held despite the fact the integrated one happened.
i caught the first 45 mins of this last night it was pretty interesting and disturbing too that something like this would still be going on. there is total integration for everything else in the school except that there is a different homecoming court (white and black) and different prom. that is just stupidity if you ask me, but they do live in a rural small town in mississippi so I can understand that there are values there that stay there when compared to a larger city. you know what really shocked me though about the whole white/black prom thing at this high school? 70% of the student population is black, only 30% is white. So even though the whites represent a minority in the school their parents still have major control over what the school board does. there are various reasons for why that is I wont go into it because then this gets moved over to the D&D. will watch the rest tonight its cool that Morgan Freeman did this
so the good news is this: it's a freak show worthy of a documentary in this thread, we're all shocked that people still live and think this way we have marginalized this stuff there's your silver lining.
Please do. I was going to put this in D&D anyway but was unsure if it belonged there. Please explain.
Per Wikipedia, the Asian population of Charleston, MS is 0.36% and the Hispanic population was 1.55%. None of which seemed to be students.
You guys seriously need to get around more This happens all the time in Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and even here in Texas. I had a buddy of mine move from a small town in Mississippi and told me that White people live on one side of the track and the Black/Asian (very little) live on the other side of the tracks. Also there was strict rules not to go out at night because sometimes they get a little too drunk and do some Stupid things. Also it doesn't help that the local law enforcement is all white. I remember when I was kid driving through Vidor Texas. Never stop at Vidor that place is KKK country.
Semi-related, I remember seeing a recent documentary about a segregated Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama that still goes on today.
I will but as I mentioned I havent watched the entire thing yet the rest is on the dvr I want to finish watching the entire thing before explaining what reasons i think
Ummm, maybe it's these people that live in "Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and even here in Texas" that "need to get around more."
i saw it on and saw "documentary" and kept moving on the guide.. didn't switch to it cause i assumed it was a crappy documentary following random teens at a prom (thinking MTV type production) will try and catch a rerun out of the 300 times this week HBO is sure to have it on
