Is there anyone out there who enjoys progressive metal? It is not a very popular genre in the USA, but very popular in Europe.

Who here listens to Dream Theater, TransAtlantic, or Spock's Beard? I know there are other good ones, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Dream Theater is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. I now place them third on my list, just behind Led Zeppelin and Metallica. Their music just mesmerizes (sp?) me when I listen. It is almost like a rock orchestra. Each member has a Ph. D in music, and knows his stuff top to bottom. Three of the 5 members did a side project called Liquid Tension Experiment. The whole album was recorded in one week (none of it written beforehand) and one or two of the tracks were recorded completely adlib, and it is amazing music that sounds better than some of these bands who use all kinds of studio tricks to cover up their mistakes. I love that fact about them.

So Dream Theater fans, let yourself be known, do not be shy!

Raven..Imm shocked noone has responded so far, so I will. I worked the show they did at the Tower Theater right before it closed and I must say that they are the MOST technically proficient band I have ever seen.(and I have seen literally hundreds.) [IMG]

I haven't kept up with them since the third album (pathetic,I can't remember the name right now) but they seemed to disappear for a while. Have you kept up with em?

Oh yes, I have all their albums. Which album was the one you stopped paying attention to them? I have been to three of their concerts, all in the last 2 years or so, and they are better than ever. They have a new keyboardist, who is almost as good as Sheridian, but doesn't have terrible attitude.

The last album they put out was a concept album that was basically a play. The whole album played out describing a murder of some woman by her husband because she was having an affair with the husband's brother. It is very cryptic, but truly awesome.

If you are a big fan of progressive metal, I sincerely suggest getting either their albums, or the side project Liquid Tension Experiment (there are two CDs of that band). Great stuff.

(By the way, thanks for taking pity on this thread and responding... I was beginning to think I was the only person that enjoys progressive metal and Dream Theater. I at least hoped that some Europeans would respond, since Dream Theater is huge overseas)

That's not surprising considering that Europeans don't seem to swallow every New Thing that the record companies shove down our throats.. they actually listen to what is good! [IMG]

That would explain why the metal acts are so popular overseas while they can't get the timeof day around here.

The last album I bought from DT was Awake..I almost got the live album that came after it (i think it's called A Change of Seasons and that was two albums ago..
have you hit the Dream Theater website?? Very cool design..fitting for such a cool band...

Actually, Change of Seasons was a studio album. It had some live songs on it, because the only song on that album that was original was (surprise surprise), A Change of Seasons... here's the kicker, its 24 minutes long. The rest of the album was filled with live covers.

But after that album, they made Falling into Infinity, which some say is their worst work, because the record company they play for pushed very hard for them to release an album that is more geared towards radio, so they could get some play, and possibly increase popularity in the states. While it did get more radio play than the previous albums, it wasn't enough, and after that, the record label never pressured them about their music again.

I, however, still loved Falling into Infinity. The songs are shorter, and more pop sounding in some cases, but it is good stuff nonetheless.

Scenes from a Memory was the following album (and the latest, concept album I described in an earlier post). The only song they released to radio was 12 minutes long, and subsequently never got any play (but I still recommend you hear it).

That is a cool site, and thanks for the link. I think I have visited the site before, but they must have changed the design, because I don't remember it being that great.

Their guitarist, John Petruci, is one of the best in the world. His main flaw (if you can call it that), is that he makes all his solos look too damn easy when played live. But I have never heard any other guitarist even come close to being able to play Flight of the Bumblebees on guitar... the man is amazing.

(Wish I could remember what song that was that he played Flight of the Bumblebees... it was live, I know that)

That's great Francis3422, but believe me, progressive metal is very different from the likes of Slipknot. Most progressive metal has keyboards, and has a great deal of production involved, meaning that the songs are almost orchestrated, because everything works together.

Progressive metal is very tame compared to hard death metal like Slipknot. I still recommend that everyone give it a listen.

On a side note, how many members does Slipknot have in their band? I saw them an Ozzfest a year or two ago, and it seemed like there was 10 guys or so on that stage running about.

Damn I wish I could remember who that was...

Was it Guiffria, Crimson Glory, hmmmmm.

Anyone remember hearing it in the 80's??
