The term would be "extract" audio from a video clip, or "get" audio from a video source.

I believe any Roxio SoundStream version can do it, so can Windows Movie Maker, makes them into WMA, but you can still play WMA in most MP3 playing software.

Try the Movie Maker that is already on your XP computer.

Just open the video file in Audacity and it will extract the audio to the stage.

EDIT: You're right. Movie maker can't EXTRACT, it can only add. But this guy says otherwise.
there is no "Winamp media file". It has a Winamp Media icon, and it might be oopened with Winamp media, but it has a file extension and it will be .avi (Windows Video), .wmv (Windows Media Video), .asf (Compressed Windows Media File), .mpg (Compressed Media), .mov (QuickTime), or .asx (this last one is a text file with URLS pointing to an AVI, ASF or other video or audio file).

What extension is the one you have? Right click the file and select properties. On the General sheet, the name should have yourfilename.ext, where the ext is the type of file. If it is one of the ones I mentioned, it seems that Windows Media Maker will open it. Else, we need to know what type of file it is.

BTW, you might want to say: "When I try BLAH, WIndows Movie Maker does BLAH" instead of "Windows Movie Maker doesn't work". Give us details, so we can help YOU.

    Thanks Swoly-D

    It is an avi file.

the problem with windows movie maker, is that for some reason i cannot find the command where i can extract the sound, maybe i'm just blind(probably).

A runtime error in a runtime library is a programming error in a library (dll) so... you said that it it is an avi file, so if you downloaded it off of the internet chances are that it is compressed (probably with Xvid or Divx)... meaning it takes a codec to decompress the file and my guess is that the problem lies in the codec...

EUREKA!!! Drag the file to the COLLECTION area first.

THEN, slowly, drag the file ONLY to the AUDIO/MUSIC timeline. This should give you ONLY the audio in your movie. SAVE the file. It should be AUDIO ONLY. PRESTO! You're not actually "extracting", you're SAVING AS audio. ;)

You can use virtualdub to convert the avi to mp3.

Don't click "save" on the bar, select "save movie ..." CTRL+P from the File menu. This way you can then select "save to my computer" which is the highest quality (I think variable rate) up to 160kbs in a WMA format. Most CD recorders can take your WMA and put it into the CD you can play in the car. iTunes can turn it into .acc file format when importing. WinAmp can play it. There is no need to go to MP3, unless the program you use to make the CDs specifically can't do WMA.

The last part is converting it to MP3 which you may NOT need to do. Let us know how you like listening to EDDIE MURPHY's RAW or Robin Williams on WMA format. ;)

Thanks everybody for helping, it worked.

Swoly-D. sorry it are dutch standup comedians. However raw of Murphy was very funny.

I'm trying to make a selection of my favorite stand up comedian moments, I had alot of smal mp3 clips, but of some i only had a video file, and i wanted to include those in my list.

    Thanks again.

Robin Williams isn't DUTCH? Oh, crikey... he sounded so EURo-ish in Mrs. Doubtfire...

Don't tell me Bergkamp went Stand Up? :D I loved him in '98!
