A couple of days ago, I moved into a new apartment here in Austin. I decided on Time Warner for cable and Internet. No complaints about the cable so far (pretty much what I hoped for), but something seems wrong with my Internet connection. Basically, the speeds are far from what was advertised (which was ~7Mbit/s IIRC). I don't think I ever really get more than 1.5-2Mbit/s, and I end up with <1Mbit/s quite a bit (the last 5 tests I did recently were in the 0.4-0.6Mbit/s range...almost what my upload speeds are). I tried restarting the modem, trying different cables, different outlet, different OS/computer, etc., but none of that seemed to change things too much. I thought I figured out the problem when I removed a splitter (it was used to provide a signal to both my cable receiver and the cable modem from the same outlet). My next test showed ~6.7 Mbit/s, but then speeds went back to "normal", so I'm guessing that was just a weird fluke. I'll probably end up calling Time Warner either later today or tomorrow, but I was curious to see if this was a common problem. I've never had Time Warner before, or even cable Internet, so I'm not sure what some common issues are. (I knew I should have checked my Internet connection out before the technician left).
My problem with Road Runners is that they are WAY too fast. Signed, Wild E. Coyote Back on topic, sometimes a cable network is slow because there are a lot of users in your area. It's definitely a good idea to check with them about your internet speed.
fixed. You're not using an unsecured wireless network, are you? That happened to me once (the router was reset, and forgot to reconfigure everything) but as soon as we password protected the thing, our speeds jumped up dramatically and are now close to what TW advertises.
I thought about that, but this seems a little extreme, especially since it seems to be the case pretty much all the time (not just during busy hours). Maybe 4-5Mbit/s instead of 7, but 0.5 Mbit/s? But then again, that's why I'm asking. I would think maintenance on the network would be more likely. I did see some page where you can see what Time Warner is working on, but I couldn't really make much sense of it (more so the information about what areas would be affected). No.
Likely a bad modem. Call TW, have them try and send a signal out to your modem. If they see a high latency/packet loss they'll probably want to send someone out. Not likely to be any kind of software issue since you tried different systems or a signal loss since your tv signal is working fine.
At my last house in NE Austin, I had to force them to give me a signal booster. I was having problems with my cable and internet. Once they gave me that, I had no more problems. At my current house in RR, I was having problems, but it turned out that my wiresless router was crapping out. Since I've removed it, I've had absolutely no problems. roadrunner speed test
I called them earlier in the afternoon, and they seem to think it is the modem (although there was no packet loss apparently). They'll send someone out later in the week. I do get a free month of RR Turbo. I did some more speedtests to see if that changed things, but all it changed was my upload speeds (which is now 2-3 times faster than my download speeds at times). Thanks for all the info. I was worried that maybe this was just something normal with cable/RR.
