The other day, my copy of Norton Internet Security 2004 started acting funny. Basically, the program would no longer work. Seeing this, I thought that I would go ahead and buy Norton Internet Security 2005 because its free after rebate, and plus, it would give me the program with the latest virus updates. Now, I can't install 2005 because Norton 2004 is corrupted. I tried uninstalling Norton 2004, but cannot because of some DLL file. I tried doing it through Add/Remove Programs and I also tried manually via the instructions on the Norton website. Does anyone know what I need to do to uninstall 2004 so I can install 2005?
Find the process that is using the dll and kill it. A useful tool is Process Explorer. You can download it here. It will help you identify what process is using that particular dll. Hopefully this helps. Process Explorer
I would NEVER recommend buying and installing a NEW program just because the previous version "started acting funny" or "would no longer work...". I would recommend FIXING the previous installation either manually or with the UNinstall program these sorts of software include. Well, now that you are at the point of no return, you can try using XP's Restore feature, which is, basically, a point of YES return. Man, do I love it when people say "it's not working" without giving details... :rolleyes" How about you tell us what error messages you are seeing...? How about you describe what your computer tells us this "some DLL file" is ? Just trying to help here.
Fair criticism indeed I should have been clearer. I tried System Restore, but apparently that did not work. I tried removing Norton Internet Security via Add/Remove Programs and it says that Norton Antivirus cannot be removed giving me Abort, Ignore, Retry options afterwhich my computer freezes. The DLL files are N32CALL.dll and DEFALERT.dll . Both of them are in a folder entitled Norton Antivirus which is the Norton Internet Security folder.
Aggie your best shot at resolving this is to reinstall the Norton 2004. once you are successful in that...you can uninstall it and install the new version.
