Indiana is nearing a three-team trade that would send swingman Ron Artest to the Los Angeles Lakers, a league source has told ProBasketballNews.com.

Meanwhile, Lakers forward Devean George would end up in Indiana.

The third team involved in the proposed trade is the Toronto Raptors, according to the source. The Raptors would send Jalen Rose to Los Angeles --and in return receive Pacers forward Austin Croshere and at least one player from the Lakers.

The source added that George and an undetermined player from the Raptors -- or perhaps a draft pick -- would be to dealt to the Pacers.

"Basically, it's Artest for Devean George, with the Raptors getting involved to make it work financially," the source said. "When and if it happens, this will be a trade that consists of plenty of throw-ins."

Three weeks ago, Artest told the Indianapolis Star that he wanted to be traded. He later apologized to his teammates and told management he would like to remain with the team. But Pacers president Larry Bird told The Indianapolis Star on Monday that he felt "betrayed" by Artest, and said the Pacers will indeed trade him.

Artest has been inactive since his comments about wanting to be traded, which came after he was injured against Dallas on Dec. 6. Since then, the Pacers have been flooded with trade requests.

Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh told the Associated Press on Wednesday the team had narrowed its options down from about 10 teams this week, but did not indicate when a trade might occur.

Artest averaged 19.4 points and 4.9 rebounds through 16 games this season. He was suspended for 73 games last year after the well-documented brawl during a game in Detroit.

Croshere is averaging 8.1 points and 6.3 rebounds for the Pacers, while Rose is scoring 9.6 points in just 25 minutes per game -- his lowest averages in both categories in nine seasons.

George is also near his career lows in scoring (5.6 ppg) and field-goal percentage (38 percent).

The source said he was not given a timetable as to when the proposed trade might take place. "I hear they are very close to finalizing everything, he said, "but it sounds like there are a few kinks that still need to be worked out."

I don't how legit this is but it sound like the what the Pacers were looking for, expiring contract and draft picks.

If that's true, it's an absolute fleecing by LA.

Also, they recieve Artest and Rose for George? How do they recieve $22 million in salary for George's $5 mill? Jalen Rose wouldn't "help" make the finances work. All the Lakers need to do is send George plus Laron Profit or Aaron McKie to Indiana to be within 25%.

I'm not saying this to doubt you personally or the article's legitamacy.

I thought Walsh said he got allstar offers. Devean George???

If they are happy with George, why dont' we offer Swift? Swift's better than George, right?

I know this trade doesn't make much sense unless Lakers trade Lamar Odom because the salaries don't match.

And even then, Odom + George = Rose. Not Rose + Artest.

Plus, Raptors trade out $15.7 mill and get back Croshere (8.9) plus Odom? George? Pacers trade Artest + Croshere for just George? The numbers are completely out of wack.

    Sadly, no.

As for the numbers, maybe one or more of the teams has TEs or something to make it equal. On talent, I'm not worried about the Lakers getting Artest, who could do them as much harm as good. But, as cancerous as Artest is, Indiana is moronic if they settle for George as compensation. He's not too bad, but they can do better, even with Artest being crazy.

I'll believe it when I see it. The Lakers are almost as bad as the Knicks in lopsided deals that are "almost done" being leaked (read: made up) to the media.

I am not going to believe this rumor until I hear Jack Haley say something definitive on the matter. ;)

LA would need at least a $15 mill TE. I'm fairly certain they don't have a blue chip like that.

If this is true, there no way the "undetermined player" is Odom. Odom is the second best player of the Lakers. If he's in the deal, he has to be the main piece, not a throw in.

And Artest for George? This got to be kidding even if he's crazy.

    So the Lakers would have

    Kobe
    Artest
    Rose
    Odom ????

If this deal goes through? If they can some how pull that off I'd rank the Lakers #2 in the West.

I seriously hope that doesnt happen. Watching the lakers be decent again has hurt me, Im not ready to watch them to be good again this soon

Here is what would happen to the Lakers if that's the lineup. One day, on the court, Rose all of a sudden starts yelling "I am Magic Johnson! Magic freaking Johnson!" The opposing players start laughing at him. Kobe will act tough and come out elbowing them, and gets clobbered in the face all the way into his lockerroom. Artest stays away from the confrontation, then gets bear thrown at him by fans. He will climb up the stands and starting fighting there. While all this happens, Odom is smoking pot with Phil Jackson and pondering about the meanings of life on the bench...

    No way........

Too much salary coming to the Lakers for George's $5 million a year. Like somebody mentioned earler, the "undisclosed player" would have to be Odom for Indiana to be actually getting anything of value for Artest. And I don't think with even Odom's salary that could match the salary they would be receiving for Artest + Rose.

This report sounds bogus to me.

Y'all forget this gets rid of Croshere's contract. Granted, an Artest for George/Croshere is FAR from equal, it does help the Pacers. 1. they get a serviceable SF to replace Artest and 2. they eliminate Croshere's contract. IIRC, the Pacers' payroll is one of the highest in the NBA

    From the Kobe thread :

"Kobe Bryant yelled at Lamar Odom for botching the play. He continued yelling at him as the team walked dejectedly off the court and didn't stop until they entered the locker room."

Odam was a 9.7/17 player with the Heat before he join Kobes and Artest is now 4.9/19.4.

I wonder, if Ron made a mistake and Kobe starting yelling to him, what could happen.... :D :D

Kobe might be the bigger egomaniac, but Artest is no one's b****.

    Not gonna happen....

    http://www.rotoworld.com/includes/topblurbs.asp?sport=NBA

Indy Star reporter Mark Montieth was on WNDE 1260 radio in Indianapolis this afternoon and said that the report about Ron Artest and Jalen Rose going to the Lakers is not likely and that it was a case of "poor journalism."
Montieth went on to say that a trade with Denver was more likely, with Nene being the centerpiece of the deal. It sounds like Artest will be moved in the next two to three days, but Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird aren't about to tip their hand as to what they are working on. As for the Jalen and Artest to the Lakers story, it's still a possibility, but it doesn't sound probable as of right now. If nothing else, it sure livened up the basketball world today.
