A suspect was taken into custody and all the children were reported safe. WGBA-TV reported that Principal John Klang was in critical condition at a Madison hospital. The student walked into the school at about 8 a.m. and shots were fired as people tried to get him under control, Melissa Nigh, dean of students at Weston School, said in an interview broadcast on MSNBC. The K-12 school was briefly locked down Friday morning, officials said. “All the children in the school were safe and none were harmed,” Sauk County sheriff’s Capt. Michael Haifemann said. “We have a suspect in custody.” The principal was apparently shot several times, Haifemann said. Cazenovia is a community of about 300 people about 60 miles northwest of Madison. Weston had planned to hold a homecoming parade Friday but it was canceled after the shooting. Local TV station WKOW-TV said the suspect was a former student armed with multiple weapons. School district officials told NBC News affiliate WMTV the Weston School principal was flown to a hospital for treatment. On Wednesday, a gunman took six girls hostage in a Colorado high school classroom, sexually assaulting some before killing one and taking his own life.
