KATMANDU, Nepal -- In a surprise twist the government of Nepal has named Crown Prince Dipendra as King after he shot most of his family to death and then turned the gun on himself.

Dipendra, who was earlier thought to have died of his wounds, is now reported to be in a coma and on life support at an army hospital after the palace massacre.

The announcement of Dipendra's accession to throne following the death of his father, King Birendra, came in a brief statement from the Nepalese privy council carried on state radio.

It said that given the new king's condition the late king's brother, Prince Gyanendra, was being appointed as regent, or acting king.

State radio also confirmed that the Dipendra's mother, Queen Aiswarya, was killed in the shooting.

No further details of the killings were given although it is thought that as many as 10 members of the family were killed as Dipendra unleashed a hail of automatic gunfire at the palace late Friday.

Three others are reported to have been seriously wounded.

The bodies of the dead King and Queen are expected to be cremated along with the other dead royals at a riverside temple later Saturday.

I know its not right to wish someone to die, but I hope he doesn't pull through because of what he did.

Nice culture you folks have in Nepal. Perhaps the lack of oxygen at those high altitudes is to blame?

I think nobody really knows what happened...it might be that he was not the one who shot the others, that is only what was reported first...very strange story.

Possibly. But then what's the excuse this country has for kids gunning each other down in schools? What's the excuse any culture has for doing anything we deem stupid?

I just read the latest news and watched a TV report about the Nepal killings - I don't think that the son killed his whole family just because of a dispute about his future bride. He went to Eton, and in general, people who went through an education like that are not that Barbarian. That alone would not be enough of an argument, but it smells VERY fishy that they now say it was an "accident" that the semi-automatic handgun went off. Also, it is VERY suspicious that the new king and his son are just about the only surviving members of that whole royal family - everyone that was ahead of him in the order to become king was killed... When I saw the TV report, the guy also LOOKED strange. Although it is so far away, I find this mysterious and sad incident very interesting. I would not be surprised if later, one would find out that it was the brother who now became king, who was behind all of this.

"King Gyanendra went on national television to pledge a full investigation
of the royal tragedy that shook this impoverished Himalayan nation. But
he has already lost credibility by saying Sunday that the previous king
and most of Nepal's royal family were killed by ``accidental'' automatic
    gunfire.

``We don't want Gyanendra,'' said businessman Rajeev Tamrakar.
    ``We don't believe him.''"

RichRocket? Has he said anything in this thread?

A sidenote: Interesting how hardly anyone really seems to care about something that is happening outside of the USA and with no direct relation to the States.

Man us Americans have been like this a lot longer than the last few months.

No one seemed to care about that dance hall floor in Israel falling through when I posted a topic about it either.

"Uhhh, yeah, Your Honor, I was just sorta.... cleaning the gun... yeahhhhh, cleaning it... and my uhhhh finger, it slipped-- I have like carpal tunnel syndrome or something, yeahhhhh... and well I accidentally pulled the trigger like a dozen times or something, it got like stuck, I think... so I sort of accidentally killed my parents and six of their guards. Accidentally, like totally not on purpose."

    Damn. Come ON.

    Reminds me of the Simpsons...

Question: How many folx outside america know about the pedophile that was working I-10? or about Jenna Bush? or maybe about Tropical Storm Allison?

The world is a big place and beyond fairly large things
no one cares about other places.

The media is a funnel of info . . so getting that info is a bit of work [i.e. internet and well that ain't always correct]

I don't think you can compare those things to the deaths of 10 people in a royal family or people being buried underneath the rubble of a collapsed dance floor with videotape of the whole event.

Both are a little bit more tragic than a pedophile, a drunk, and a tropical storm.

    A couple of things.....

This was the worse royal massacre since the massacre of the last czar of Russia and his family by the Bolsheviks, so we should at least be aware of it.

Prince Dipendra, who was responsible for the shootings, was named King for 3 days then mysteriously ended up dying by a "self inflicted" gun wound.

The reason that this story may have not gotten the attention it deserved is because the Nepalese government controls the media there, and prevented details of the massacre to get out. You can only run a story so long with the evidence the national media has.
