Obama: IAEA Must Investigate Iran's Covert Enrichment Facility

Yesterday in Vienna, the United States, France, and England "presented detailed evidence" to the International Atomic Energy Agency demonstrating that Iran has a covert uranium enrichment facility near the city of Qum, President Obama announced at the G-20 economic summit in Pittsburgh this morning.

The decision to build this facility represents "a direct challenge to the basic compact at the center of the nonproliferation regime," Obama said, appearing with President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Prime Minister Gordon Brown of England.

"We expect the IAEA to immediately investigate this disturbing revelation," he said.

However Obama added: "We have offered Iran a clear path toward greater international integration if it stands up to its obligations, and that offer stands."

Senior administration officials told news organizations before Obama's remarks that Iran has a "secret underground plant to manufacture nuclear fuel," 100 miles southwest of Tehran. The enrichment plant, however, is said not to be in operation.

President Obama said today "the size and configuration of this facility is inconsistent with a peaceful program."

He said there is now a "sense of urgency" about an October 1 meeting in Geneva with Iran, Germany, and the permanent members of the Security Council (the so-called P5+1).

Iran sent the IAEA a letter earlier this week revealing that a "new pilot fuel-enrichment plant is under construction."

The Obama Administration made the decision to go public with the evidence about the plant, which the US has reportedly been tracking for years, because Iran learned that Western countries knew about the facility.

The IAEA, for its part, has asked Iran for specific information about the facility, and access to it, as soon as possible.

Iran is not a threat. They are our friends. If we just stop being mean and saying mean things about them they will come to our campfire.

Are you pointing out the chasm of difference between the idiocy of the Republican approach and the rational diplomacy of Obama?

    Good job.

I think all of us can honestly say, without debate, that America dodged a bullet by not electing that crazy old coot.

Reading articles by people who know, the only effective way to bomb the hardened enrichment plant at Natanz would be with nuclear weapons. That would be immensely, completely and totally foolish.

But if the secret plant at Qom is equally hardened, that would be taking absurdity to a new level, as not only would nuclear weapons be an atrocity, but nuking one of the Shiite holy cities would pretty much ensure WWIII, if the nuking of Natanz somehow failed to accomplish it.

If it came to that, we'd be better served by trying to mount a full scale invasion of Iran, which would be an epic bloodbath and a major stain on American history.

Who knows if this is true, or Obama as usual is trying to appease Israel/neo-con crazies.

As has been pointed out by some moderate national security experts we can live with a nuclear Iran. I am not all that uncertain that it might not be good for Israel as they could calm down and might be forced to actually negotiate with the Arab World. Now they use their nukes to bully everyone and I think unrealistically feel that they can use a military option and or threats to avoid dealing with the Palestinians.

Yep, of course. Israel's nikes make them feel invincible like they don't have to have real concern about negotiation.

    Yeah...

Based on everything I've seen, I'm reasonably sure that Iran is building nuclear weapons. I'm also fairly positive that if they succeed their presence would greatly increase the death toll in Lebanon/Palestine/Israel.

It seems more than a little coincidental that the last Arab lead attempt to remove Israel occurred right before Israel let it slip that they had developed nuclear weapons.

The fact that I think nuking Iran is a bad idea doesn't mean that I think the IRGC is all sunshine and lollypops.

    I don't think either.

He's trying to give Muddle America pause in pronouncing him everything-bad-ism. How can you talk about him being a socialist when he saber rattles like GWB? And it gives a distraction from healthcare while tiny steps of progress are made congressionally.

Nor do I, but of course I don't think Israel is either.

Luckily no president of the U.S. has taken that attitude.

I assume that the post about Iran coming to our camp if we are not so mean was sarcastic.

An Israeli I know is absolutely certain there will be a military strike and he didn't dismiss atomic weapons from the menu at all. It was back in the summer that I talked to him, but he was very matter of fact about it. Of course, if Atilla were alive and Israeli, this guy would be standing just to his right. A couple of people I talked to today thought we had to consider nukes to take them out. I told them they were crazy. These are normally rational people. I think the brutal crackdown by the theocratic regime lost them a lot of fence sitters. Not only here, but around the world. A pretty scary situation, for sure.

Your post shows why we should view Israel as a threat to world peace and shows how deranged the group in control has become. We need to start taking steps to reign in Israel. Fortunately Israel is one country that the US could easily reign in given their extreme dependence on us.
