And another piece of major legislation has be passed. First Healthcare reform and now Financial reform! Well done Mr President!
Now if he would just pass something reallly good instead of trying to protect the health care and financial industries. I don't know honestly whether it is better to pass watered down bills such as the stimulus, health care and financial "reform" or go for something better. Hopefully these flawed laws can be bettered maybe second term.
You know he has to work with Congress to get anything passed. In fact its Congress that does the passing.
Given the alternatives, this is good. I would prefer something much more substantial, but you pass bills with the Congress you have. Anyway, here's one guy's run down of what's decent in the bill...
Lotta nonsense when all they needed to do was reinstate the net capital rule limiting leverage by big institutions. That and forcing firms to include derivative and other forms of leverage as real leverage would do the trick. Instead we have a running train and like in India, everyone just piles on the train as its going. Thats how these healthcare / financial bills end up. Maybe a good idea but everyone throws on a special interest to get their vote and you end up with thousands of pages of who knows what with a lot of special interests and diluted powers. This isn't a knock on Obama, its just how the process works.
When a democratic president draws a positive response from HayesStreet and a negative response from glynch, it just makes the socialist radical type of labels more ridiculous than ever. Wait, that's not really possible. Okay, just as ridiculous as ever. I don't get CaseyH's pic either -- unless he is saying other nations are doing better.
we don't need any of these reforms more than we need political reform, these earmarks have got to stop, they are costing us way to much money, instead of have a budget that can be devoted 100% to healthcare, education, etc, it is divied up between special interests that have NOTHING to do with the original plan. it irritates me so much,
I lean towards glynch's take on this issue and the other reform measures passed, which are far less effective and beneficial than they ought to be, given the stakes involved, but agree with mc mark and Hayes, as well. Good progress and a heck of a lot better than nothing. I just wish they had done more. Considering how effective the negative attacks leading up to the Fall elections have been by the RNC and their supporters in the media, as well as the disruptive, if ultimately futile, Tea Party people, who are mostly Republicans who feel the party isn't radical enough for them, in my opinion, these chances aren't going to come around often and should have been seized with both hands. The elections are only a few months away and losses appear to be insured, and possibly heavy. Certainly, I hope not, but the Disaster in the Gulf couldn't have come at a worse time for the administration and the Democratic Congress. It has affected the economy and consumer confidence. Worse, from the political standpoint, the eyes of the public are there, not allowing the real accomplishments of the Democrats to garner the positive attention that they would ordinarily deserve, as well as creating a cloud over our political leadership, which just happens to be, in the main, Democratic. A major bummer. But it's nice to be able to say we've passed several reform measures, and it is true. There is still time to turn things around for my party. Not much time, but time does remain.
obama is clawing and biting for every little inch he can get. i respect that. no other president has had an opposition so willing to stop the will of the people in order to sabotage his administration. what are the conservatives fighting for again?
Dunno if this is what he is thinking, but that's Shanghai's skyline. Could be implying that Obama's policies are directly responsible for the money that is poured into the buildings there, what with the US being locked in debt to the PRC. Or he's f***** around. eh.
The Tea Baggers will surely applaud this milestone. I mean they’re all for fiscal responsibility an accountability. Right?
When half the people that care at all are totally plugged in to a well crafted propaganda campaign and their leaders's only strategy is total obstruction, no matter how illogical, we are lucky to pass anything. And it's no wonder that the legislation is crafted by lobbyist. That is the only way to build any political support. Politicians have to actually work together to get any meaningful reform of the moneyed interest. Fox news corrupts the function of the fourth estate. Though I guess the nation was has always had it's yellow press and outrageous pamphleteers.
