Observers Fault U.S. for Pursuing Mini-Nukes
    By Douglas Frantz

VIENNA — Research on a new generation of precision atomic weapons by the Bush administration threatens to undermine international efforts to stop the spread of nuclear arms and to tarnish recent successes, according to diplomats and nonproliferation experts.

The criticism focuses on the administration's decision to lay the groundwork for developing low-yield weapons — known as mini-nukes — while pursuing President Bush's doctrine of preemptive strikes against rogue states.

The diplomats and independent experts said Washington's strategy weakens support for more stringent controls at a time when the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty faces serious challenges from North Korea and Iran and amid widespread fears of terrorists acquiring atomic weapons. The U.S. strategy, critics say, may cause other countries to pursue nuclear arms.

"The U.S. follows a double standard that allows it to develop and threaten to use nuclear weapons while denying them to smaller countries," said Hussein Haniff, Malaysia's ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. "We do not know whether the nuclear nonproliferation treaty can survive with these U.S. policies."

If you're going to go Nuke, Go big! Why waste your time with the Mini Nukes:D

Seriously though, tacticle Nukes can solve a lot of problems by allowing specific targets to be taken out without causing fallout. For instance, you can take out a Air Base with one quick hit without causing as much damage to the surounding population. I know the "as much" comment will cause a up roar.

Listen, war is messy, it's unfortunant, but there will always be inocent by standards and you can't always negotiate your way through these things. Sometimes you gotta get ugly and I for one would rather see us use these devices and save some lives on both sides as opposed to sending in 1000's of troops and puting may more in harms way.

...the use of any nuclear weapon capable of destroying a buried target that is otherwise immune to conventional attack will necessarily produce enormous numbers of civilian casualties. No earth-burrowing missile can penetrate deep enough into the earth to contain an explosion with a nuclear yield even as small as 1 percent of the 15 kiloton Hiroshima weapon. The explosion simply blows out a massive crater of radioactive dirt, which rains down on the local region with an especially intense and deadly fallout.

Interesting read; It astonishes me that the US double standard was not seen until now. Bush will not be reelected.

Mcmark and others, don't you know that buried bunkers per se are considered offensive wmd's and are an imminent threat to the United States? Is is always possible that these buried bunkers could have some wmd. Please provide your evidence that it is impossible for these bunkers to hold wmd.

glynch, you can be so dumb sometimes.

Don't you see: once we hit said bunkers with mini-nukes, they will definitely contain at least one WMD each! I mean, duh! The proof will be right there for thousands of years for any inspector to detect. :D

We already have nuclear weapons. Other countries already want them. I don't see the development of new, smaller nukes as a big problem, considering we already have the great big nukes. Were Iran, N. Korea, etc planning on giving up their nuclear programs before we started plans to develop tactical nukes? I think not. This is an attempt by all the same people that complain about everything Bush does (and not just those on the board) to make a big deal out of nothing.

If only GWB could get sarcasm classified as a WMD.

In my honest republican opinion... I think every man, woman, and child should have a nuke. No one in this world is safe with those terrorists sonsabitches walking around. If everyone had a nuclear weapon, wouldn't the terrorists realize they are useless and try to concoct some even grander diabolical scheme? BINGO!
