That dude is right on and let's not forget the Rockets are 10-5 with Yao and Mcgrady in the lineup this year.

GOOD little article on the Rockets. Kind of makes me feel better. :)

And we actually moved up 5 spots in the Rankings when in a 3 game skid! :D

Power Rankings: Hope springs eternal in Houston

    CBS SportsLine.com Staff Writer

Typically, if a team fell 14 games under .500 in the Western Conference at any point in the season, players and coaches could start planning fishing expeditions or spring trips to Europe.

Playoffs? Have fun watching them on television.

However, in Houston, there's a quiet buzz of hope. Nothing that's consuming the organization, considering the Rockets' current three-game skid. But now back at full strength, there's a feeling that not all is lost.

Yao Ming returned Monday night from a 21-game absence caused by an infected toe that required surgery. Although his presence wasn't enough to spur Houston to a tough road victory in Memphis, it was encouraging to see him back in the lineup looking like his normal self.

Tracy McGrady has scored more than 30 points in four of his seven games since returning from his most recent bout with chronic back spasms. The Rockets are 0-13 without him and have had their two All-Stars in the same starting lineup just 15 times this season.

Despite leading the league in games lost to injury, there's really no excuse for Houston's drastic collapse. A team many felt would compete for a championship should have rallied to hold down the fort to some degree.

Rafer Alston was brought in to add firepower. Ditto with Stromile Swift. Juwan Howard returned from his heart scare last season and has been steady. However, as a whole, they simply couldn't finish the job, particularly struggling in fourth quarters where no one new who should have the ball.

Now there's no doubt who gets it. Unfortunately, there's also no room for error.

If the Rockets are going to stage a resurgence, it has to begin now. They're dead last in the West, seven games out of the final playoff spot. A winnable stretch of games begins Wednesday against Milwaukee, as they play five of the next seven at home. Only two of those opponents will come in with winning records. The road games are at New York and Philadelphia, which won't exactly strike fear in anyone's heart.

The time is now to pick up the pieces. If they can get some positive momentum going before the All-Star break, they can indeed be a factor down the stretch.

    The week's Power Rankings:

    24 Houston Rockets 29
Rafer Alston has stepped it up since Tracy McGrady's return, which is yet another positive for a Rockets team looking to salvage the season.

You know what? This article makes me completely forget about our damn near perfect run required just to make the 8th seed :)

I didn't count the Detroit game at home that Mcgrady sat out the whole 4th quarter because of back spasms. So the Rockets are 9-5, yeah, but they will be 10-5 with Yao and Mcgrady after tonight.

What a stiff this guy is. He and Gundy must be best pals. Following this theory to its illogical conclusion any 12 of us with enough heart can win the NBA title. Sounds like a great Hollywood Movie: ENOUGH HEART: The story of 12 5'6" white guys, all over 40, who when their NBA team's plane crashes, take over and win the NBA title with Jeff Van Gundy coaching them. :p

This is the same loser who ranked Yao as the 5th best center in the league before the season.

The Rox need to go 25-12 to get to a .500 record for the season, that is not impossible with a healthy team. But will 41 wins get the 8th spot? Keeping in mind that we already lost tie-breakers with the hornets and grizz. I think we need to finish out the season 28-9; 44-38 should get us in. That might be asking for too much but it is possible if they can go on a run b4 all-star break.
