As some of you may know from other threads, my area recently took a very hard hit from some ice storms last week. My power was out from Tuesday night until Monday afternoon. I was not really thinking right with not heat and temperatures dropping into the teens so most of my food spoiled. Everything in the freezer was a loss but I am wondering about some thing in the refrigerator. My mom said that all the condiments such as ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, etc. are all still good but she threw out anything containing eggs or milk such as mayo and salad dressings. She also said that the margarine and butter are still good as well as the eggs.

I trust my mom but I don't know if I can attempt to eat something that I think is or may be spoiled. I couldn't even use the ketchup last night because of it. So my question is, what is really good or bad?

Why didn't you take it all outside and bury it in the ice :p

Unless you are really hurting for money, throw it all out. What your mom said is pretty much right. Even eggs are ok as long as they weren't at room temp for more than a couple days.

During Ike, we lost power for two days and we tossed everything except the baking soda boxes, the caned drinks and bottled beer..

Man why risk it to save $20 worth of stuff- just throw it ALL out and start over. You won't regret throwing it out but you might really regret not throwing it out.

Ditto throwing it all out. The bad odor may have permeated through everything there, even in bottles. It may have not gone bad, but it very well might taste bad.

The eggs are not good. Also if you have saurkrat and relish and stuff toss those as well. But seriously toss everything and avoid being sick. The loss of being sick outweighs $20 bucks of groceries.

Check to see if any of this is covered by your insurance. That being said, if you have coverage for it, I doubt you'll reach the deductible.

The eggs are fine. Most of the world does not refrigerate eggs.

Most of the world doesn't process their eggs like the US. The US scrubs the protective layer that prevents bacteria and such from permeating the egg, therefore requiring it to be refrigerated.
