Anyone else hear this during the Nuggets/Lakers game? I almost spit up my drink. JVG didn't let it slide either, and was ripping on the comment for a long time after.

    Yeah,

I don't think that analogy works in basketball.......

You are either the greatest or you aren't...maybe if he said the best little man ever...

by definition of pound for pound, there's an argument although I think there are other small players just as good as he was. pound for pound he might be the greatest scorer though

I LOL'd when JVG said "I need to lose some weight so pound-for-pound I'll be better than I was"

Pound for Pound, the best player of all time is Jordan.

Then maybe Wilt?? Mark Jackson was being an idiot.

Silly comment. I like Mark Jackson but that was just a dumb thing to say.

i like mark jackson too but he's been stumbling a lot with his comments of late, and jvg has not been reticent to call him out for them. that meltdown earlier when jvg pointed out laker losses to bad teams in a kobe-for-mvp discussion was hilarious. "what does winning have to do with anything?"

Well, avoiding the semantics of "pound for pound", Iverson is nothing short of unbelievable for a player his size.

32 years old now, and he's still a 26-7 guy that played all 82 games this season and can still blow past over 90% of the league at will. After scoring 22 and then 23 his first two years, he's been a consistent 25+ PPG his entire career.

I get that his game does not mesh well (if at all) with winning team play, and all the image hits he got from hanging with bangers and then the infamous "practice" press conference. Still, if you can't give this guy his due, you need to take another look. He is a good guy, he gives more effort than most people night in and night out, he's a willing passer, only WIlt and MJ have a higher scoring average (best of luck finding the next 6-foot-nothing guy on the list) and he's already #20 all-time in total points scored for a career (again, find the next 6-foot-nothing guy on the list) and should leap up to #15 by this time next year, over Ewing and Barkley.

He's a unique guy, and I'll go ahead and say that he goes down as a legend.

Durability/Longevity, Quickness, and Scoring ability. No other player his size comes close.

great post, he's amazing. i remember around 03-04 when he looked like he was falling apart i used to say at that time i'd rather have francis. now i look back and think i must have been crazy. i really thought iverson would be the one to break down. and like you say, its not just the durability, its the level he plays at. he's an amazing athlete.

Also: #5 all-time in Steals per game, #13 in career steals (will be #12 next year).

I don't know about the "p-per-p" comment, it's sort of stupid and doesn't really make much basketball sense. However, had they said that he was the best "little man" to ever play the game, then I would have nodded in agreement. He's definitely the best sub-6 footer to ever play the game. However, Chris Paul might have something to say about that before it's all said and done. That kid has Isiah's body/attitude but an even better game.

Great post, agreed on all points. AI is a monster, an 'aberration' that has really no peer in NBA history.

pound for pound, he's the worst player for your team. talk about a guy who doesn't make his teammates better.

I really do admire the longevity of a guy like Iverson. Not many guys can be consistent super-scorers in this league for over a decade, yet he's been able to put up numbers night in, night out for a long time now despite his petite frame.

Magic Johnson was more than 20% better than Allen Iverson. He was less than 20% heavier.

Jerry West was more dominant during his time, and was listed lighter than Iverson is listed.

I don't pretend to know, but the old-timers say that Tiny Archibald would eat Allen Iverson's lunch.

you mean like going to the nba finals and having an mvp under your belt with no other all star on that team

yeah he sucks at making teamates better. i mean, who couldn't carry that team to the finals are some of those other stellar philly squads.
