The decent showing in the playoff suggests that we are not 2 far away from being a legitimate contender. The core, therefore should be given some more time to gel and be supplemented with an impact player or two. We do not have the mid-level exemption this season, so trade exemption is the only route to improve. Here are some scenarios, which I think can improve the team without giving up any of the core player:

    1) Land Sheed or Okur for T.E

This can only happen, if the Pistons decide not to spend so much money to lock them up.

    Chances of happening<25%

    2) T.E+Weatherspoon+Pitkoski for SAR

Portland gets a huge tradeexemption, a shooter and a backup forward. SAR all round game will really help the Rockets at the forward positions. He is outrageously expensive, but only for one season. Depending upon which way we go we can extend him to a suitable contract or let him walk. A win-win situation. We will also need to signup a backup PG say Charlie Wards or Travis Best ---.

    Chances of happening>75%

    3) T.E+Weatherspoon+Pitkoski for Tyson Chandler+Antonio Davis

Chicago gets cap relief. Rockets get a young forward with alot of potential and a stud in Antonio Davis. This will enable us to move Cato or MoT to upgrade other positions say Brenty Barry----

    Chances of happening>60%

    4) T.E. for Juwan Howard and remaining T.E for say Charlie Ward.

Orlando is probably going to retool and hence Howard would be available. He may not have the toughness of Antonio Davis but is much younger and still an impact player. His current contract is cap friendly for a 17/8 guy. He will be a big improvement than starting Cato at P.F. Although MoT and Howard have a similar game and are not exceptional defender, offensively they will be a handful for the opponent.

    Chances of happening>60%

    5) Go the risky rout. Use the T.E for Dice and Stephen Jackson and prey they are healthy and fit in the team as role player.

    6) Get a backup center say Ostertag for bargain price (out of T.E.) and try to do be part of a blockbuster trade to improve the forward positions.

    Chances of happening <40%

Can you NEVER ever suggest we get Ostertag again?!?!?!

    Thanks in advance.

I don't see any of trade proposals as realistic, especially the Portland one. I presume you're including a future first-rounder in these trades, and just not mentioning it, but that's still way insufficient. If the Bulls really, really wanted to get out of Davis' massive contract, they might listen to the offer, but it's only two years and you're essentially offering garbage and a little bit of caproom. No one's going to give us anyone but garbage for that. Howard's a slightly better possibility, but again, I wouldn't do this if I'm Orlando except to get under the luxury tax threshold.

Sorry, just like with exercise, no pain, no gain. You can't expect to acquire anyone meaningful without giving up something meaningful.

The trade exception will only be meaningful in a S&T where the player actually wants to come here or in combination with a good cheap player like Cuttino. We're only going to be able to get talent by taking on a bad long contract, and none of the ones you've described qualify.

There's apparently a good chance that Charlie Ward won't be resigned by the Spurs this offseason, so the good news is we might be able to sign him outright without having to use the TE. I'm hoping the Rockets offer him a two-year contract at the veteran's minimum.
