    What a bunch of idiots.

Tabling the political silliness, I know this is difficult for them to discern but the Portland Trailblazers =/ the City of Portland.

I'm going to preface this by saying I really don't know a whole lot about the Chinese government.

But from what little I do know, I'm getting really f***ing tired of them.

The PRC is acting like a petty brat here. They shouldn't even respond to this sort of stuff.

I know I'll get flamed for this but "Tibet awareness" day is pretty dumb. Most of the Portland city council probably can't even point out Tibet on a map.

The PRC should NOT be getting their panties in a bunch over something like this. Americans already hate China. Evidently the PRC doesn't give a damn.

Why is a city declaring that it feels Tibet should be independent, when its country doesn't even think so? When even Dalai Lama isn't even advocating such things right now?

Is there an election going on or something where the mayor needs the pub? Because I can't see any other reason for such a stunt.

As for the Chinese government, they need to stop responding to every perceived slight. This sort of stuff makes them look petty and stupid. It's not so much whether they're right or wrong. It just seems idiotic a decision from a PR standpoint. Let Portland have its day, which most of the public probably doesn't even give a damn, and Americans will forget it next day.

Problem solved without lifting a finger.

I'll take this over proxy wars or nuclear arms races any day of the week.

China is really going to have a fit over Oklahoma City's Taiwan awareness day later this season.

Quite to the contrary, most americans I know dont give a crap about China.

Hating takes effort, most of us are too busy living our lives to care enough to expend the effort.

    "Don't give a crap"?

I dunno, considering the flood of topics about China in this forum and all the discrimination out there, I'd say most Americans do give a crap and that China is like some strange machine entity that they have been conditioned to fear.

What other society could spawn rumors of baby-eating soup and human cannibalism among even rational Americans?

Its too late! Chinese netizens have taken swift, decisive action and created photoshopped images of Greg Oden with a white man's penis. They have now successfully restored China's honour.

Notice in this map that Tibet and Taiwan are both represented by separate colors from China -- i'm curious of our netizens response to such clear and present data.

Few Americans "hate" China. Many harbor a strong dislike of its totalitarian government, but that's entirely different.

How do you know a Polak's thinking about Tibet? When he goes to a casino.

Would this sanction actually affect the city?

I mean, if we assume that Blazer's revenue is actually spent in Portland, it could affect merchandise revenue for Blazer's gear. But since the NBA shares merchandise profits, it wouldn't hurt specifically the revenue going to the Trailblazers, right? If it prevents kids from becoming interested in buying Blazers jerseys, if they become fans of another team they will just buy a different jersey, and Portland will get the same share from that.

    Or am I missing something?

Reminds me of the time they banned the third johnny depp movie about pirates. I want to lay down the law on china for even showing portland trailblazer games. It should be rockets all the time.

It's hard for PRC bosses to grasp that the city of Portland is not under the leash of the federal gov't and the city's biggest sports team is not under the leash of city of Portland. Both of such would be the case in China.

On the record, Portland didn't declare Tibet is an independent country. Had that been so, the Obama administration probably would have had something to say about it. According to commissioner Leonard's blog, the Tibet awareness day is at the urge of Portland't Tibetan's community and on that day all Portland's city offices raise a Tibetan flag, probably not including federal branches. PRC needs to calm down. The response has to be proportionate. Maybe Shanghai can have a Hawaiian culture day, or Texas independence day as retaliation?

    Maybe "hate" is too strong.

They are the new rival since the dissolution of the CCCP. I suppose there was bound to be a rival and they fit the bill the best. At least, there are billions in trade with this rival and a lot of economic co-dependence.

In the end, China needs to lighten up on some stuff. And I still think Tibet Awareness Day is stupid. Unless it counts as a paid holiday.

I would be curious if anyone in America makes a stink about Shanghai doing something like that. My guess is that no one would complain but you would get a lot of Texans and Hawaiians supporting it.

Perhaps Shanghai should hoist a Confederate flag at their city hall as that might get a rise out of some Americans.
