I call bull$**t... porcupines don't live in Florida.

Hopefully no one has tried this, though (or the guys didn't simply change their story, and had actually tried it in California).

What I'm wondering is why they got treated in LA. Although I never have experienced this, I wouldn't want to fly across the country on an 6 hour flight with needles in my giblets.
